POMONA - The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team got off to aggressive starts in each half en route to a season-high 23 shots, but was unable to generate a goal in settling for a double-overtime, scoreless draw with Stanislaus State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest at Kellogg Stadium on Friday evening.
The Broncos move to 4-4-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the CCAA, registering their first point in the conference standings. Stanislaus State, ranked ninth in the latest United Soccer Coaches West Region poll, is now 4-3-2 overall and 1-0-2 in league play.
Cal Poly Pomona began on the front foot with four shots over the opening five minutes.
Taylor Scott had a wide one almost straight off the kickoff, before another long-distance effort by
Phoebe Amaro was caught by Warrior goalie Amanda Leal, though it looked to be going wide as well.
Allyssa Larkin then had an attempt off to the left from close range, and a second one blocked from the edge of the penalty area.
In the 11th minute,
Emma Barrow took a right-footed shot, again from 18 yards, that curled away from the left post. The graduate transfer saw a left-footed try from a similar spot go off the mark in the 16th. CPP held an 8-4 shot advantage as the game remained goalless at the break, but only one of the eight was on target, that a hopeful right-footed effort by
Elise Garcia from 18 yards as the final couple seconds ticked away. Leal corralled it easily by the right post.
Right out of the interval in the 48th minute, Larkin rattled the crossbar with a right-foot bullet from the right diagonal, and Garcia was denied by Leal on a rebound try. Seconds later, Scott dribbled in from the left diagonal, but her right-footer could only find the left-side netting. In the 62nd, Larkin rounded the keeper and thought she scored into the empty net, but the assistant referee's flag was up for offside.
Garcia nearly found the upper right corner from 20 yards in the 76th, but Leal was able to scoot over to her left and make the tough grab. Senior
Jillian Erwin, making her season debut off the bench in the second half, had her shot go narrowly wide of the left post in the 83rd.
The home side ultimately accounted for the first 12 shot attempts of the second half, with five on frame to necessitate Leal saves, and the one off the bar, but didn't have a goal to show for it, bringing on overtime.
The teams combined for four off-target shots and four corner kicks over the two largely-uneventful 10-minute extra periods, as it ended 0-0.
Senior
Sydney Williams had three saves for Cal Poly Pomona, earning her third shutout. Leal, a transfer from CCAA foe Cal State LA, had six stops for the Warriors. It was her sixth clean sheet, including the fourth in succession as Stanislaus State has kept opponents scoreless now for 452:36, going an unbeaten 2-0-2 over its last four matches.
The final shot margin was a hefty 23-10.
Cal Poly Pomona continues this three-game home stand this Sunday, Oct. 10, against co-leader Cal State East Bay (6-2-1, 3-0 CCAA). Kickoff at Kellogg Stadium is set for 11:30 a.m., with the men's teams concluding the doubleheader at 2 p.m.
