#16 CPP Comes Up Short for Tournament Title

LOS ANGELES — With a chance at a CCAA Tournament title on the line, No. 16-ranked Cal Poly Pomona battled but came up short with a 3-1 loss to No. 6-ranked Cal State L.A. Sunday.

The Broncos drop to 12-4-3, while the Golden Eagles improve to 14-2-2.

Cal State L.A. got on the board first in the 24th minute, despite the Broncos holding a slight shot advantage (6-to-5) in the first half.

Down 1-0, CPP turned up the pressure and looked like it would find an equalizer in the 50th minute off a free kick from 25 yards out. Eduardo Faria put his shot on target, bending toward the back corner, but the Eagle goalkeeper made a diving save to keep CSULA in front.

Twelve minutes later, however, things took a turn as the Eagles upped their lead to 3-0 off two quick goals.

Still, the Broncos kept fighting and broke through in the 85th minute. Oscar Griehsel Facey sent a ball over the Eagle backline, allowing Jerry Ramirez to sprint onto it. Ramirez caught the Eagle goalkeeper in no-man's territory and tucked it into the back of the net to cut the score to 3-1.

In the final five minutes of action, the Broncos pushed tempo but couldn't create anything offensively as the final whistle blew for the 3-1 defeat.

Following the tournament, Ateno Ajeakwa, Kevin Hernandez and Fin Jackson were named to the All-Tournament Team.

CPP, which ranks fifth in the NCAA Division II Super-Region 4, is expecting to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA DII National Championship Tournament when the Selection Show airs Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Pacific on NCAA.com.
