Cal Poly Pomona Stays Unbeaten With 75-52 Win Over Westcliff

POMONA - The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team continued non-conference play with a comfortable 75-52 victory over Westcliff University at Kellogg Arena on Wednesday night.

CPP is 3-0 for the first time since 2018-19. The game served as an exhibition for Westcliff (1-2), a California Pacific Conference (Cal Pac) member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) located in Irvine. It was the first-ever meeting between the programs.

Senior Phoenix Shackelford, named Tuesday as the season's first CCAA Player of the Week as a first-time honoree for his career, didn't waste any time getting things going, scoring off a Dane Erikstrup feed just 16 seconds in. The Broncos ran out to another fast start with the first seven points of the contest through a Shackelford triple and pair of Christopher Mitchell free throws, and led for the balance. They were up 19-5 prior to three consecutive three-pointers by three Warriors.

Nice feeds on back-to-back buckets heading into the under-eight timeout came from senior Tavian Henderson and true freshman Jaden Winfield, assisting Winfield and then Shackelford on jump shots outside the paint.

At the break, it was 34-25, with Shackelford showing no signs of a letdown as he poured in 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor.

Erikstrup tallied the first four points after the interval, and a Shackelford steal and breakaway layup made it 40-27. A Mitchell runout moments later off a Winfield steal, with a foul, led into the first media timeout. The made free throw coming out of the stoppage gave the Broncos their largest lead of the game to that point, at 43-27.

Shackelford set up Henderson for a fast-break dunk and 48-29, and the latter Bronco followed with a soft layup on the ensuing possession to force a Westcliff timeout, down 50-29 with 13:25 to go. A fast-break dunk by Chris Gayles Jr., assisted by fellow redshirt freshman William Chavarin, settled the largest margin at 23 and the final score at 75-52.

Mitchell led all scorers with 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field and 7-of-10 from the line. Nobody else had more than four free throw attempts in the contest. Shackelford was in double digits for the third straight game, with 15 points. Henderson generated 11 points and eight rebounds. Erikstrup contributed eight points and game highs of nine boards and three steals. Redshirt freshman Brase Dottin tallied the first eight points of his college career off the bench, knocking down a pair of three-pointers. CPP outshot Westcliff, 49.2 percent to 35.8.

Joshua Harrison had 12 points for the Warriors, and Adofo Thomas 11.

CPP next faces its first road test of the 2021-22 campaign this Saturday night, Nov. 20, at Biola University (3-0). Tip-off inside Chase Gymnasium in La Mirada is slated for 7:45 p.m. The Eagles are favored as runners-up in the Pacific West Conference.
