CARSON, Calif. - Despite a monster 24-point performance by true freshman
Dane Erikstrup, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team dropped an 80-73 decision to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rival Cal State Dominguez Hills at the Torodome on Saturday.
With the loss, CPP is now 6-3 overall and 2-3 in the CCAA. Cal State Dominguez Hills moves to 6-5 overall and 3-2 in league play.
Erikstrup, a 6-foot-10 big man out of Portland, Ore., shot 8-for-16 from the floor to lead all players in scoring with the first 20-point effort of his young college career. He was 4-for-8 from long range and made all four free throws, adding seven rebounds, one blocked shot and an assist over a season-high 34 minutes.
The game began with back-to-back jumpers by Erikstrup. After a three-point play by redshirt freshman
Christopher Mitchell, Erikstrup took a pass from senior guard
Phoenix Shackelford and drilled a top-of-the-key three-pointer for a 10-6 CPP advantage at the first media timeout.
On the heels of a D'Mauria Jones put-back layup, the Broncos went back on the offensive and got consecutive buckets by Mitchell,
BJ Standley and Mitchell again for a 16-8 cushion by the under-12 break. Standley's lay-in came after his own steal. A short time later, it was Shackelford on the steal and fast-break layup, with the foul, which he converted for 19-11.
Shackelford grabbed a rebound on the defensive end, pushed it ahead on the break once more and again found Erikstrup at the top of the key for a triple to make it 24-17 approaching the five-minute mark. Three-pointers from Erikstrup and fellow true freshman
Caleb Nelson helped CPP take a 32-27 edge into the locker room, having led for 18:24 of the half.
The first four points after the interval went to the Broncos, courtesy of an Erikstrup-assisted
Tavian Henderson dunk and Shackelford layup. CPP went up by 10 on two more occasions, through a fourth three-pointer and then a pair of free throws by Erikstrup at 16:20, before the home side began its rally.
Cal State Dominguez Hills chipped away around the under-12 timeout and finally pulled even at the line at 45-45 with 10:29 to go, and took its first lead of the night on a Jones floater on its next possession. There were two more ties, at 47-47 and 50-50.
Colton Kresl knocked down a pair of huge three-pointers around a Shackelford triple within a span of 45 seconds, and a put-back three-point play by Chris Seeley gave the Toros a 56-50 lead. Shackelford answered with his own three-point play off the offensive rebound as well, from a rare three-point miss by Erikstrup.
The hosts gradually grew their cushion to as many as 13 points, 69-56, by the 1:42 mark. CPP still made a strong run at its deficit, getting it down to five with under a minute to go on two free throws by Shackelford and three by Standley in quick succession following some contentiousness, but Cal State Dominguez Hills managed to hold on.
Shackelford backed up Erikstrup with 18 points and also contributed team bests of nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Mitchell scored in double digits for an eighth game in succession, and grabbed a season-high nine boards.
Kresl, a two-time All-CCAA selection, led the way for Cal State Dominguez Hills with 21 points, going 5-of-7 from long range and dishing out a game-high five assists. Jordan Hilstock added four three-point makes on four tries en route to 14 points. Jones (12), Seeley (11) and DJ Guest (10) also scored in double figures, with Seeley's game-high 10 rebounds giving him a double-double.
Cal Poly Pomona allowed 80 points for just the second time this year, both road losses at local league foes. The Toros' 49.1 shooting percentage (28-57) is a season high by a Bronco foe thus far.
