Broncos Outlasted in Double-Overtime Torodome Barnburner

CARSON, Calif. - In a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's basketball thriller that saw both teams earn and squander multiple chances to win, it was Cal State Dominguez Hills outlasting Cal Poly Pomona, 78-73 in double overtime, Saturday afternoon at the Torodome.

CPP falls to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in the CCAA. Cal State Dominguez Hills moves to 4-6 overall and 2-3 in league play. The Toros have won three in a row and are 4-1 at home. The Broncos had taken the previous nine meetings overall and the last four in that venue.

The home side jumped out to a 6-3 lead thanks to an 8-1 rebounding margin, five of them on the offensive end, as CPP countered with an Ally Bates three-pointer. The Broncos regained a 9-6 edge by the media timeout through six straight points off the bench by senior Chynna Cochran. Breanna Ha's triple stretched the run out to 9-0 between a pair of Hosanna Walker baskets for the Toros.

A clean Bates jumper off a nice Cochran feed after a Jayda Villareal offensive board, followed by a Cochran-assisted Ha triple from the left baseline, made it 17-8. Ha then dribble-drove for a tough floater and the Broncos led 19-11 after a quarter behind her game-high eight points.

The second period began with back-to-back CPP turnovers that led to Asia Jordan layups, before a step-back Bates jumper, two Cochran free throws and another Ha floater pushed the lead out to double digits for the first time at 25-15 heading into the media stoppage.

Rebecca Islas caught an airball and got the put-back to go, and Ha threw in a deep triple from straight around, around what amounted to a four-point play by Cal State Dominguez Hills' Kelsey Bell. Cochran then picked off a pass and cruised in for the uncontested lay-in, but the half ended on a 4-0 mini-run by the Toros as they trailed 33-25 at the break.

In the third, successive buckets by Ayah League after gathering the rebound of her own miss, and a driving layup by Ciara James, forced the Toros into a timeout, down 39-29. Amaya Snowden notched the next five points for the hosts, however, as Danelle Bishop called a timeout. Another 5-0 run after Monica Todd and Danyell Booker traded baskets, tied the contest at 41-41 with about three minutes to go in the quarter.

Cochran broke the deadlock with a driving layup from the right side. After Walker pulled the Toros even again, Ha's mid-range jumper from a Villareal inbounds pass with five ticks left made it 45-43 after three.

Auren Isaacson's left-wing triple seconds into the fourth gave Cal State Dominguez Hills its first lead since it was 6-5. CPP thankfully had the answer, though, as Islas hit a corner three and Bates got the jumper to go down following a turnover. Back-to-back three-pointers by Ha and Bates gave the Broncos some breathing room again at 56-48.

The home side tallied the next nine points and 11 of the next 12 around the media timeout, six of them off Bronco turnovers, to retake a 59-57 lead. Villareal caught the airball as Islas put up a deep three with the shot clock expiring, and found Sydney Fedinec near the right baseline for a huge triple. The last 2:40 from there would see just a free throw by the Toros, as the contest went into overtime.

The extra session started with a Kelsey Bell three after two Toro offensive boards. Bell and Bates then traded a pair of free throws. Islas gathered a James miss and flipped it in, but Dawson Bell countered with two from the stripe. A Fedinec triple from the top of the key, assisted by Bates, tied it once more at 67-67.

Jordan and Islas traded layups, both off the offensive glass, and Islas was fouled on hers, though she missed the free throw. James then produced her league-best 19th blocked shot, her second of the game, to help send the game into a second overtime.

That period started promisingly enough for CPP, as Villareal drilled a three, but the Toros nabbed the next eight and held on.

Ha poured in a game-high 19 points, shooting 7-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-7 from long range, with a team- and season-high eight rebounds and her first career steal. Bates added 18 points to best her previous high as a Bronco, as both she and Ha reached double figures for the first time since Nov. 19. Cochran finished with a season-high 12 points, providing her first double-digit scoring effort in the green and gold, to go along with three boards, three assists and a pair of steals. Villareal equaled her career best with five assists.

Kelsey Bell had 16 points to lead Cal State Dominguez Hills and added nine rebounds. Jordan posted a double-double with 14 points, a game-high 17 boards, and five steals. Isaacson collected 11 points, matching Bell's three triples. Dawson Bell provided six assists and five steals.

The Toros out-rebounded the Broncos, 61-53, including 29-20 on the offensive end.
