No. 21 Cal Poly Pomona Gets Back to Winning Ways Against Warriors

POMONA - The 21st-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team used a 13-0 second-half run to break things open and defeat Stanislaus State, 66-54, in its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) home opener Thursday night at Kellogg Arena.

With the win, CPP improves to 5-1 overall and an even 1-1 in the CCAA. Stanislaus State falls to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Cal Poly Pomona ran out to a 28-20 halftime lead on the strength of a 24-15 rebounding advantage. The visitors actually led 12-4 in the early going before the Broncos turned it on. Senior BJ Standley hit a jumper for 12-6 within about a minute of entering the game after having missed the first five contests, and added a pair of defensive rebounds in short succession and an assist on a Tay Aubry-Thomas dunk for the next CPP bucket. The Vallejo product then set up true freshman Caleb Nelson for a three-pointer to close the hosts to within three at 14-11.

Two straight baskets by Tavian Henderson made it 16-15 Stan State, and then back-to-back field goals by Phoenix Shackelford gave the Broncos their first lead of the night at 19-17. They would not relinquish it. The final five points of the half came from CPP as Shackelford got a layup and then fed Nelson for a last-second triple.

After the break, the 13-0 run came in between a pair of Benno Zecic buckets and put the Broncos further in command at 41-22. Layups by Henderson and Dane Erikstrup, set up by Christopher Mitchell and Jaden Winfield, respectively, were followed by back-to-back Henderson-assisted Shackelford three-pointers around a Warrior timeout for a 38-22 cushion. Following a turnover, Mitchell connected from long range, too.

CPP ran its lead out to 20 points at 52-32 through an offensive rebound and dunk by redshirt freshman Chris Gayles Jr. with 8:44 to go. The advantage grew one final bit to 21 when Shackelford's layup made it 56-35, before the visitors made things a little closer down the stretch. Stan State produced an 11-0 run, with a Nelson three-pointer putting an end to that. Nine points was as close as the guests would get from there.

Nelson wound up with a game- and season-high 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor. The Carlsbad product made all four attempts from beyond the arc, and his only free throw. Henderson and Shackelford added 14 points and seven rebounds apiece, combining for seven assists. Mitchell was a fourth Bronco in double-figure scoring, with 10. Standley's lone basket gave him 900 points for his college career, with 581 coming over his first two years at Saint Martin's. He also collected three boards, three assists and two steals in limited minutes. Erikstrup had four points, six boards and three blocks.

Luis Salgado was the lone Warrior with double-digit points, scoring 10 to go along with five rebounds and three steals.

The final rebounding margin was 46-32 in CPP's favor. The Broncos won despite shooting just 39.7 percent (25-63) from the floor.
