TURLOCK – Playing as a nationally-ranked team for the first time since 2018, 25th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona extended its win streak to eight matches with a 25-19, 25-22, 25-16 sweep of host California State University, Stanislaus, on Friday night at Fitzpatrick Arena.
The win was the eighth in as many outings this season for the Broncos, who opened California Collegiate Athletic Association play against the Warriors on Friday. Stanislaus State fell to 4-5 overall.
Sophomore
Kylie Brandt erupted for a career-high 14 kills, and fellow second-year player
Jazmyn Wheeler continued to pace the Bronco offense with 11 kills and a .345 hitting percentage, as Cal Poly Pomona secured its fourth 3-0 sweep of the year.
Brandt, who had totaled just 13 kills combined in nine previous career appearances, had a steady offensive performance throughout the night on Friday. She had at least three kills in each of the three sets, including eight in the second set, which the Broncos eked out with a three-point victory. She hit .316 in the second set and .270 for the match.
Wheeler, meanwhile, continued her consistent offensive play with her fourth consecutive double-digit kill effort. She has also had a hitting percentage of .300 or better in three of her past four matches, and on Friday collected her third straight double-double after adding 10 digs.
Cal Poly Pomona overcame an early deficit in the first set, taking the lead at 6-5 and not looking back. A pair of scoring runs fueled by the service of
Mackenzie Sullivan and
Jenna O'Shea keyed the opening-set win for the Broncos, whose offensive efficiency was limited to a .140 percentage.
The second set was more of a slugfest offensively, with the Broncos hitting a robust .364 and the Warriors at a .250 clip. It was the efficiency and proficiency of Brandt and Wheeler (six kills, .667 percentage) that helped Cal Poly Pomona escape eight ties and four lead changes to take a 2-0 lead. The visitors trailed as late as 21-20 before going on a 5-1 scoring run behind three straight kills by Wheeler and capped by a point from Brandt.
Setter
Kira Zimmerman, who finished with 30 assists, had nearly half of those – 14 -- in the second set. She also led the Broncos with three service aces.
Cal Poly Pomona never trailed in the third set, although the Broncos and Warriors were tied on four occasions. The last of those knotted-up scores was at 4-4, though, as a brief 3-0 run put the Broncos in front, and the closest that Stanislaus State could get was a one-point margin a few serves later.
CPP had a statistical advantage in every category on Friday, edging the Warriors in kills (42-36), assists (38-27), aces (6-4), digs (60-52), and blocks (4-2). Zimmerman (30 assists, 11 digs) and Wheeler (11 kills, 10 digs) both recorded double-doubles, and
Jazminn Parrish and
Brynn Sherbert tied for match-high honors with 13 digs for the Broncos.
Stanislaus State was led by the 10-kill, 11-dig outing from Ellison Weaver. Mya Marshall added 11 digs in a losing effort.
Cal Poly Pomona stays on the road on Saturday (Sept. 18), traveling north to face Chico State at 7 p.m. The Broncos return home to Kellogg Arena on Sept. 24 against Cal State San Marcos.
