Broncos Break It Open In Second Half to Win 3-0

POMONA - The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team got goals from three different players and handily topped fellow West Region contender Concordia University Irvine, 3-0, to kick off a season-long four-game home stand at Kellogg Stadium on Friday night.

With the victory, the Broncos improve to 2-1. Concordia, the preseason pick for runner-up in the Pacific West Conference, falls to 1-2-1. All four of the Eagles' contests so far this fall have come against California Collegiate Athletic Association opposition. CPP had most recently dropped a tough 3-2 decision at Azusa Pacific, picked to place third in the PacWest behind CUI.

The only shot by either side over the first 16 minutes of the contest came from the Broncos' Elise Garcia within a minute of the opening whistle. Her right-footed attempt from the edge of the penalty area didn't trouble fellow senior Hailey Asato in the Eagle net. Olivia Ocampo's right-footer then served as the visitors' first shot at 16:02 following a defended free kick, with the ball whizzing just clear of the crossbar.

The initial corner kick of the night was earned by CPP in the 22nd minute, but the right-sider went out for a throw-in on the other flank.

The match looked destined for a scoreless deadlock at halftime, but Cal Poly Pomona struck almost out of nowhere at 41:56 to take the lead into the break. Junior Bridget Carbonneau sent a hopeful pass far ahead up the center of the pitch following a free kick in the Broncos' own half, and Melanie Harradine managed to be the first player to get to the ball, doing so just ahead of Asato and knocking it past her and into the bottom right corner for the true freshman's first collegiate goal. The assist marked a first career offensive point for Carbonneau.

Just over four minutes into the second half, the hosts nearly doubled their advantage as Allyssa Larkin got her head to Garcia's cross from the left, but it went straight into Asato's arms. Seconds later in the 52nd, CPP came even closer to another score, as senior striker Taylor Scott corralled the loose ball and dribbled forward into the penalty box on the left before flipping a pass over to the right to a wide-open Larkin, only for Asato to go down to her left to deny the opportunity.

At 63:44, the Broncos finally added to their lead through a great team goal. Scott retrieved the ball on the left side of the penalty area and played it back to Garcia, who squared it over into the center of the box for junior Phoebe Amaro to unleash a wicked first-time shot that went off the left post and in past a helpless Asato for 2-0. It was Amaro's first career goal, with Garcia and Scott both notching assists.

CPP closed out the Eagles at 69:48 as senior Emma Barrow, a graduate transfer from the University of San Diego, scored her third goal in as many matches in the green and gold. Even from a narrow angle, she perfectly rose to head home a right-sided corner kick from Sydney Kallman at the back post. It was a first college point for Kallmann.

The corner kick in question was earned thanks to an incredible strike from 25 yards out by Allison Hung that Asato narrowly tipped out.

A 76th-minute goal by Concordia was ruled out due to offside. Cassie Snow's direct free kick from 20 yards in the 84th smacked off the bar.

For the second time already this season, senior Bronco goalie Sydney Williams picked up a shutout without even having to make a save thanks to the stout defense in front of her. Asato wound up with five stops for the Eagles. CPP finished with an 11-3 shot advantage, holding Preseason PacWest Player of the Year Jadenn Carrillo without a single attempt.

CPP is back in non-conference action at Kellogg Stadium this Sunday afternoon, Sept. 19, welcoming in St. Edward's University (1-2-1) from Austin, Texas. The matinee kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m.
