POMONA – For the second time in as many nights, the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos volleyball team used a high-powered offense to complete a three-set sweep of its opponent inside Kellogg Arena. On Friday, the Broncos defeated Western Oregon University 25-16, 25-13, 25-23.
Sophomore
Jazminn Parrish led all players with 12 kills while hitting at a .476 percentage, while senior
Ruki Kennedy added nine kills and a .750 percentage as the Broncos (2-0) hit at a .383 clip with 40 kills and just nine errors in 81 attempts.
Cal Poly Pomona had opened the season with a three-set sweep of Western New Mexico University on Thursday night to debut the Broncos Fall Classic, hitting .341 in the win over the Mustangs.
In Friday's victory against the Wolves (1-2), Cal Poly Pomona opened with a nine-point win in the first set that was keyed by a 9-2 scoring run late that turned a 16-14 margin into the 25-16 score. Freshman
Helen McMullin had two kills and two solo blocks as a part of the late-set scoring surge, and the Broncos capped the frame with their third block – a combination stuff by sophomores
Daisy Duke and
Kaitlan Tucker.
The offense sizzled in the second set for the Broncos, as they totaled 18 kills with just three errors in 29 attempts for a .517 clip. Parrish picked up seven of her match-leading kill totals in the middle set, while Duke and McMullin added three kills each in the second, and senior setter
Kira Zimmerman dished out 12 of her 26 assists in the frame. Cal Poly Pomona used another sizable run – this time midway through the set that turned a 10-8 margin into an 18-9 lead, aided by four straight kills from Parrish on the back end of that scoring surge.
Western Oregon gave Cal Poly Pomona its closest set of the young season in the third, although the Wolves led just twice at 1-0 and 2-1. The Broncos eventually pushed their lead to seven on multiple occasions, including as late as 17-10, before WOU chipped its way back and tied the score at 23 apiece. A kill by Kennedy put Cal Poly Pomona at match point, and Tucker then provided a solo block to close out the sweep.
Cal Poly Pomona got a combined 11 kills from Parrish and Kennedy in the third, adding four solo blocks, including two by Tucker, in the final set.
The Broncos had a statistical advantage in every category, including kills (40-33), aces (5-3), digs (32-24), and blocks (8-1).
Madison Hornback led Western Oregon with 10 kills while hitting .296.
