POMONA - The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team jumped out to a 9-0 lead, but first-place Cal State East Bay gradually grabbed the upper hand and held on late for a 64-55 decision in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action at Kellogg Arena on Saturday afternoon.
CPP drops to 5-11 overall and 4-8 in the CCAA. Cal State East Bay, which was receiving votes just outside the top 25 in Tuesday's latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) national poll, moves to 15-1 overall and a still-perfect 10-0 in league play with a 14th successive victory. The Pioneers had also won this season's first meeting, 69-55, in Hayward back on Dec. 16.
The game started with two technical free throws by
Ally Bates due to a pre-tip infraction by the visitors, followed by a Bates-assisted
Breanne Ha three-pointer for a quick 5-0 edge for CPP. Ha added a layup and
Monica Todd made two free throws to extend it to a 9-0 run as the Broncos held the Pioneers without a point for the first 4:13. That's when Zhane Duckett connected on a pair of free throws.
East Bay missed its first 11 attempts from the floor around the first-quarter media timeout, before Duckett's layup at exactly the four-minute mark made it 11-4 in favor of CPP, which led 13-6 after 10 minutes. The teams combined to shoot 17.9 percent (5-28) with 13 turnovers.
The Pioneers tallied the first four points of the second quarter to trigger a quick Bronco timeout, up by just three at 13-10. Back-to-back three-pointers later by Delia Moore and Christina Bacci gave East Bay its first lead of the afternoon at 16-15. Abigail Cooper then added a third triple in as many trips down the floor for the visitors, meaning a second Bronco timeout at 19-15 with 6:05 to go in the half.
The stretch finally ended at 13-0 after a fast-break lay-in by Moore and put-back basket by Sylvia Vartazarian off her own miss, as Todd scored for CPP. Another Moore layup pushed the East Bay advantage to double digits, at 27-17, with under three minutes left. Moore and
Rebecca Islas traded three-pointers, and CPP faced a 32-20 deficit at the break.
Cal State East Bay came out of the locker room and tallied the first seven points of the second half, with baskets by Cooper and Mina Tameliau preceding a Cooper three, to take a commanding 39-20 lead. Todd put an end to that run at the 7:56 mark.
Sydney Fedinec then spurred a third-quarter resurgence, beginning with a big 12-0 flurry that turned a 41-22 deficit into just a 41-34 margin. The redshirt freshman opened the rally with a three-pointer before assisting on successive baskets by
Jayda Villareal and Todd, and threw in a steal ahead of the Villareal score. Bates added a triple after a timeout, and Todd concluded that run with a layup with 3:43 to go in the third. Fedinec followed a Cooper bucket with a second triple, and answered a Grace Campbell three with a third long-distance make for 46-40 with 1:41 left. Three straight points by Villareal left the East Bay lead at just four, 47-43, heading into the fourth.
East Bay kept CPP scoreless over the first 5:27 of that final period, however, while notching seven straight points for openers, to retake a double-digit advantage at 54-43 after Duckett's three-point play. The Broncos went 0-for-8 from the field to begin the quarter, and missed a pair of free throws, before Fedinec drilled her fourth three-pointer for 54-46. Bates hit a triple of her own on CPP's next trip for 56-49, but a 7-0 run put the game out of reach.
Bates paced the Broncos with 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal. Fedinec contributed her 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc. Todd had 10 points, seven boards and five steals. Ha and Villareal scored seven points apiece. James blocked three shots.
Cooper led all players with 15 points. Campbell posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Moore produced 14 points, five steals, four boards and three assists. Duckett was a fourth player in double digits at 10 points. All eight Pioneers in uniform scored points by halftime. East Bay held a 52-37 advantage on the glass.
