MANTECA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona head women's basketball coach
Danelle Bishop was inducted into her high school's Hall of Fame on Friday, adding to an ever-growing list of awards and accolades for the Broncos' 13th-year head coach.
"I'm incredibly humbled being inducted into my high school Hall of Fame," Bishop said. "I had some of my most memorable times of my life at East Union [High School]. Thank you to the East Union Hall of Fame committee for this honor and to the entire EU High School community for all they did for me."
Bishop, a 1994 graduate of East Union High School in Manteca, is one of only two female student-athletes in the 57-year history of the school to have her jersey retired. While at EUHS, Bishop (then Danelle Liles) scored a school-record 2,210 points (17.7 ppg.), and had 988 rebounds, 524 assists and 360 steals during her prep career, knocking down 179 three-pointers. She was a four-time All-Valley Oak League selection and three-time VOL Most Valuable Player. She led the Lancers to four consecutive league championships and was a two-time Cal-Hi Sports All-State first team selection, also receiving a USA Today honorable mention in 1994.
Her impact at the school was felt as soon as she stepped foot on the campus as a freshman; the girls basketball team went 5-24 the year prior her arrival, but upon taking over the starting point guard duties, East Union went 23-5 to win a share of its first league title. At the end of her prep career, Bishop had led EUHS to a 97-24 record.
"[Being inducted into the Hall of Fame is] quite an honor that I don't take lightly," Bishop added. "Through this, I hope all the future women hoopers at East Union are encouraged and empowered to be exceptional in all they do. I wasn't the quickest or fastest, but I had grit, a tireless work ethic, heart, dedication and was coachable. I would love to see someone at EU break all those records and continue to grow the game more than it has since I graduated."
Out of high school, Bishop signed a letter of intent at NCAA Division I and Southeastern Conference-member University of Florida. At Florida, she played in six games while battling an early season back injury for the 24-9 Gators who advanced to the second round of the 1995 NCAA Tournament. From Florida, Bishop transferred to Delta College and played the 1997 season, averaging 15 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists. She was named team MVP, All-Bay Valley Conference and participated in the California State JC All-Star game. She then moved on to Tarleton State (from 1997-99) and was an All-Lone Star Conference selection both seasons. She graduated from TSU with a bachelor's degree in exercise and sports science in 1999 and earned her master's in education.
As the fifth head coach in CPP women's basketball history, Bishop has guided CPP to six NCAA Tournament appearances, which includes three Sweet Sixteen showings (2011, 2014, 2015), two Elite Eight appearances (2011, 2014) and a Final Four showing (2014). The 2014 CCAA Coach of the Year owns a win-loss record of 208-111 in 11 seasons with two NCAA West Region championships and one CCAA title under her belt. With 18 years of head coaching experience (including four seasons at Azusa Pacific and three at California Baptist), Bishop is 346-196, a .639 winning percentage; she is one of 44 active head coaches at the NCAA Division II level with 300-plus wins
Bishop entered the Lancers Hall of Fame with two other EUHS grads during a ceremony Friday night prior to the school's football game against Oakdale.
