CLAREMONT, Calif. –
Leandro Candray led the team for the second straight race, earning a runner-up finish to pace the No. 20-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's cross country team to a second place finish Saturday morning at the 13th Annual Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in Claremont.

Candray clocked a 24:48.8 on the eight-kilometer course and finished a little over five seconds behind race champion Benjamin White of Biola. His overall second place finish is his second in three races this season.

Though the Broncos tied with team champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with 50 points, CMS had the tiebreaker over CPP due to three of its top five runners earning a higher place. Biola captured third place in the team standings with 62 points.

Accounting for the Broncos' top five individual scoring finishes were Candray, Daniel Echeveste (25:24.6, 9th overall), Ricardo Vargas (25:26.7, 11th), Gideon Pichardo (25:37.4, 13th) and Francisco Zavaleta, who placed 15th overall with a personal-best 8K time of 25:40.2.

Tom McDonnell (25:46.4, 17th), Chris Razo (25:51.6, 23rd), Vincent Sarino (26:03.4, 26th), David Flores (26:05.4, 27th), Nicholas Albro (26:21.3, 35th), Christian Coley (26:38.4, 45th), Diego Duran (26:39.9, 46th), Alejandro Mariscal (26:59.8, 63rd) and Evan Franco (27:31.5, 82nd) all registered finishes for the Broncos on Saturday. Razo's time set a new PR, as well.

Cal Poly Pomona will look ahead to NCAA D2 Pre-Nationals in two weeks on Oct. 22 as a preview of the NCAA Division II National Championships course at Chambers Creek Regional Park in University Place, Wash.

  • Saturday marks the 28th meet for head coach Chris Bradford in his fifth season at CPP (six years overall).
  • This is Bradford's 11th Top 2 finish since leading the Broncos.
  • Leandro Candray's average pace per mile of 4:59 was just the 77th time in the history of the CPP cross country program that a runner has clocked a sub-5:00 average mile time (out of 1,730 all-time finishes).
  • It was also the first time in 107 finishes all-time at the Pomona-Pitzer Invite that a Bronco runner had clocked a sub-5:00 average mile time.
  • This was CPP's ninth time competing in the 13th Annual Pomona-Pitzer Invite, placing in the Top 2 for the fifth time.
  • The Broncos had previously won the Pomona-Pitzer Invite three times (2013, 2015, 2019).
  • CPP has raced three other times in history on October 8th; a split squad competed at the Alaska Invite in Anchorage, Alaska (2nd out of 3 teams) as well as the Triton Invite in La Jolla (12th of 19 teams) in 2005, then again at the Triton Invite (3rd of 6 teams) in 2011.
  • It was the program's 66th Top 2 finish all-time and the 40th race all-time finishing with 50 team points or less.
