BILLINGS, Mont. –
Samantha Aguilar ran the program's eighth-fastest time for a six-kilometer regional championship meet, crossing the line in 21:43.48 for a 19th place finish, leading the Cal Poly Pomona women's cross country team to fourth place at the 2022 NCAA Division II Cross Country West Region Championships Saturday at a frigid Amend Park in Billings, Mont.

The finish by the Broncos is their second-highest finish at regionals in program history and it is the best finish since 2010. Scoring a 191 as a team, CPP narrowly missed an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Championships in two weeks, as it needed a Top 3 finish, but could possibly secure an at-large bid. The NCAA will announce the advancing teams on Monday.

Aguilar plowed through the ice and snow under sunny skies and 15-degree weather, crossing the line 50 seconds back of individual champion Naomi Bailey of Alaska Fairbanks (20:53.08) to secure her highest career-finish at Regionals, finishing ahead of nearly 90 percent of the field. In doing so, she became just the 13th CPP women's cross country runner to earn All-West Region honors. Teammates coming in behind Aguilar were Arissa Hatcher in 28th place with a time of 21:55.8, Angela Arellano in 34th at 22:06.7, Bridget Edwards in 54th at 22:30.3 and Vivian Martinez in 56th place at 22:32.0 to round out the team scoring for CPP. Alisa Moradian took 90th place with a time of 23:06.6 and Victoria Escanuelas finished in 101st out of 168 runners, crossing the line in 23:22.2.

Stanislaus State won its first West Region title with 91 points, edging eight-time regional champion Chico State by just two points. Biola took third place with 114. Stanislaus, Chico and Biola captured the automatic bid into the NCAA Championships in two weeks with the Top 3 finish. CPP, with 191 points, held off Azusa Pacific, which netted 198 points for fifth place.

Cal Poly Pomona will await its Nationals fate when the NCAA announces the 34 teams (including the 10 at-large bids) that will compete at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships on Friday, Dec. 2 at Chambers Creek Regional Park in University Place, Wash. The Broncos are looking to make their sixth appearance at the national meet, and their fourth in the last six seasons.
