POMONA – Cal Poly Pomona Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Performance Ruem Malasarn has announced the hiring of two full-time strength and conditioning coaches that will lead the physical training of CPP student-athletes, oversee the Sports Performance Center and work with the athletic training staff to maintain and improve the overall health of Bronco student-athletes.

Mike Senyo has been named the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach and Chris Sandoval will serve as the Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Mike brings 10 years of collegiate experience as a strength and conditioning coach, serving most recently at the University of La Verne overseeing baseball, basketball, and T&F, among others. He has started two programs from scratch and managed 22 teams as the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach at Whittier College before going to ULV. Senyo also started the strength program at Claremont McKenna College and spent two seasons training 14 athletics teams and designed the athletics weight room in the Roberts Pavilion.

Senyo began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of La Verne. Senyo started coaching in 2011 at John Marshall High School as Co-Defensive Coordinator, coaching linebackers and the defensive line. He was a four-year football player at the University of La Verne where he received his bachelor's degree in Journalism and Master's Degree in Organizational Leadership and Design. He is C.S.C.S, FMS, USAW and First Aid certified.

"We are excited to have Mike join our Sports Performance Team as our Head Strength and Conditioning Coach," said Malasarn. "Mike brings a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge to our department. He has a great vision of where we can take this program. We look forward to continued growth and taking the next step for our student-athletes.

"I'm excited to lead the Bronco Strength and Conditioning Program," Senyo said. "I want to thank Brian Swanson and Ruem Malarsan for the opportunity to build on the great foundation that has been set for Broncos Athletics."

Sandoval comes to Cal Poly Pomona after serving as the Interim Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at fellow CCAA institution Cal State LA since March 2022. He began at CSULA as an intern in the summer of 2019 while completing his undergraduate degree in Kinesiology before stepping into a full-time assistant role in 2020. In his three years, he worked with all 14 NCAA Division II intercollegiate programs at CSULA and designed team training programs, collaborated with the sports medicine staff on rehabilitation and return-to-play programs, educated student-athletes on the importance of nutrition and recovery, among other duties. Sandoval is also C.S.C.S, FMS, PN1, USAW L1 and CPR/AED/First Aid certified.

"Having Chris here as our first Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach shows how important this area has become for our teams and department," added Malasarn. "Chris' efforts in maintaining and managing the Bronco Performance Center and our 11 athletic programs during a critical time of the year were invaluable to us as a department."

"I am excited to be joining the Cal Poly Pomona Athletics department," Sandoval said. "I look forward to working with an amazing staff and student-athletes."

Both Senyo and Sandoval have started within the last month, and they take over for Chase Sanders, who left for the same position at a local school.
