UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. –
Ricardo Vargas earned a 61st place finish as the lone representative for the Cal Poly Pomona men's cross country team at the 2022 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships as part of the D2 Festival on Friday morning at Chambers Creek Regional Park in University Place, Wash.

Vargas ran a 30:53.2 on a cold, wet and snowy 10-kilometer course and clocked an average mile time of 4:58. He rallied from 84th place at the 1.2-kilometer split to get as high as 49th place at seven kilometers later, but fell back to 61st at the finish line out of the 262 competitors that started the race. He came across the line 85 seconds behind individual national champion Dillon Powell of Colorado School of Mines.

For Vargas, it was the fifth-fastest time for a CPP runner at the NCAA Championships. He was the third-highest CCAA finisher in the race, placing behind two Chico State runners in Rory Abberton (25th) and Cameron Duquette (46th).

Friday wraps up an excellent freshman season for Vargas, who sported a winning percentage of 90.7 this season, which is on pace to be the fifth-best winning percentage for a career in the history of CPP men's cross country. He won his first-ever collegiate race to open the season back on Sept. 3 at the Redlands Invitational, then proceeded to earn five more Top 20 finishes (two Top 10 finishes) throughout the fall.

As a team, the Broncos collectively recorded a winning percentage of 85.55, which is the fourth best for the program since 1997.

In the team standings, Colorado School of Mines won its third NCAA Division II championship, and its second in the last three seasons. The Orediggers had all five scoring runners place in the Top 20, including their top three runners in the Top 8 overall, to score a 43. Wingate came in at a distant second place with 177 points, followed by Colorado Christian (191), Grand Valley State (209) and Chico State (265) rounding out the Top 5.
