POMONA - The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball program got 49 points from two players alone and went off for 54 first-half points as a team in walloping Cal Poly Humboldt, 87-49, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest Thursday night at Kellogg Arena.
Now with a two-game win streak for the first time since November, CPP improves to 10-8 overall and 6-8 in the CCAA. Cal Poly Humboldt, which was known as Humboldt State until late last month, lost its seventh in a row to fall to 10-13 overall and 4-13 in league play.
Cal Poly Pomona is effectively in playoff mode right now, facing must-wins to keep its season alive. In addition to breezing to victory at home, the Broncos got some help up north in Hayward, as Cal State East Bay topped San Francisco State, 84-49. CPP is one of four teams vying for the final two spots available at next month's CCAA Tournament inside Cal Poly Humboldt's own venue in Arcata. SF State and East Bay are also in that group, just above the Broncos.
Dane Erikstrup and fifth-year senior star
Phoenix Shackelford matched the Lumberjacks' point total on their own, combining for 49 over just the first 25 minutes.
Erikstrup poured in a season-high 27 to lead all players, shooting 10-of-12 from the field, including 5-of-7 from three-point range. The 6-foot-10 true freshman out of Portland, Ore., was in the starting lineup for the first time since Jan. 27, having missed the next three games after that and come off the bench in CPP's previous contest exactly one week ago at Cal State LA. The team's second-leading scorer behind only Shackelford, Erikstrup had started each of the first 13 games. He left Thursday's game for good with 15:09 to go, playing only 17 minutes.
Shackelford added 22 points, reaching the 20-point mark for the sixth time this season and eighth time in the green and gold. The Fairfield native went 8-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. He and Erikstrup each hit both of their free throws. Shackelford added five rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Cal Poly Pomona led 54-17 at the half. It was the Broncos' highest-scoring period of play this season, and their first half of 50 or more points ironically since tallying 53 points in the second half of another home rout of the Lumberjacks, 96-64, back on Dec. 5, 2019.
Shackelford's backcourt partner,
BJ Standley opened the contest with a three-pointer 65 seconds in. Like their women's counterparts to begin Thursday's doubleheader, the Bronco men led for the duration from there. Standley incidentally would not score again, leaving him at 993 career points.
Cal Poly Pomona raced out to a 10-0 lead before even allowing its first basket, by Austin Harris at the 16:45 mark, as an Erikstrup three, Erikstrup jumper and Shackelford layup followed Standley's triple. The Broncos answered Harris right away with another three by Erikstrup, as the hosts hit their first six shots.
Caleb Nelson's three-pointer coming out of the first media timeout broke a 6-0 stretch by the visitors. The true freshman would score again on the next CPP possession, this time from inside the paint, for 20-8.
Back-to-back Shackelford triples later made it 29-14, and after a Lumberjack basket, a 16-0 run really broke things open heading into the under-four timeout.
Christopher Mitchell was fouled as he flushed home a Standley pass, and completed the three-point play coming out of the under-eight timeout. Another Erikstrup basket, set up by Standley preceded a Shackelford three-pointer that ignited his personal 9-0 flurry.
CPP shot a blistering 68.8 percent (22-32) during its first-half onslaught, including nine three-point makes on 14 tries for a 64.3 percent clip. Erikstrup and Shackelford combined to go 14-of-16 from the field and 7-of-9 from outside. Shackelford was already at 20 points at the break. He made his first seven attempts, while Erikstrup hit on his first five. The 'Jacks went the final 8:24 without a field goal, getting outscored 25-1.
In the second half, the Bronco bulge extended to as many as 41 points at 85-44 with 2:49 left in the game. The 'Jacks were never closer than 34.
Redshirt freshman
William Chavarin scored in double figures for the first time as a collegian, providing 10 points while making all three of his field goal attempts and all four of his free throws. Nelson added nine points. He and
Tay Aubry-Thomas each pulled down seven rebounds.
Tavian Henderson grabbed eight boards with four assists, and blocked a game- and season-high three shots to equal his collegiate best. Standley led all players with five helpers.
CPP shot 50.8 percent (32-63) from the field for the game, and held a 43-28 advantage on the glass.
Jaden Edwards paced Cal Poly Humboldt with 17 points and six rebounds. Bryce Mitchell, Christopher's brother, provided 10 points and a team-high eight boards. AJ Sims had 11 points off the bench.
This Saturday, Feb. 19, is Senior Day at Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos will take on Sonoma State, with tipoff inside Kellogg Arena slated for just after 3 p.m., following the conclusion of the women's game that is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, and a recognition ceremony honoring the men's basketball program's three incredible senior student-athletes. That trio is made up of Henderson, Shackelford and Standley. Please click
