Todd's 22 Points and Nine Steals Lead CPP to Resounding Win Over Seawolves on Senior Day

POMONA - Monica Todd was everywhere to the tune of game highs of 22 points and a career-best nine steals on Senior Day to lead the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team past Sonoma State University, 70-53, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action Saturday at Kellogg Arena.

In winning a second consecutive game for the first time this season, CPP improved to 8-14 overall and 7-11 in the CCAA. Sonoma State, which had come in a winner of two in a row, drops to 9-14 overall and 8-9 in league play. CPP has still never lost at home to the Seawolves, now 25-0 against them in the friendly confines, and has taken 23 of the past 25 matchups overall.

The Broncos were tied just once after 0-0, at 8-8 early on Thursday, and never trailed over their two victories this week to wrap up the home schedule, leading for 78:43 of the 80 minutes.

Cal Poly Pomona thus kept its postseason hopes alive. The Broncos would still have to sweep next week's road trip and get help elsewhere. They did, meanwhile, damage Sonoma State's prospects, as the Seawolves sit precariously in sixth place, with the top six advancing to the CCAA Tournament. CPP was in 10th to begin play Thursday, and as of Saturday afternoon, was narrowly behind SSU in eighth. League winning percentage will determine this year's final standings, due to several games having been canceled because of COVID-19 protocols.

The senior trio of Todd, Rebecca Islas and Jayda Villareal were recognized prior to the start. Islas grabbed two rebounds to give her exactly 300 for her CPP career. Villareal's first three-point basket of the afternoon was her 100th in the green and gold. Todd had eclipsed the 600-point milestone for her Bronco career in Thursday night's 68-57 triumph over Cal Poly Humboldt, and now has 623. Both Islas (538) and Villareal (517) are up above the 500-point mark at CPP.

Todd led all players Saturday with 22 points and a career-high nine steals. She fell two points shy of matching her best effort as a Bronco, and also grabbed seven rebounds and handed out two assists.

Cal Poly Pomona came up empty on its opening possession, but Todd stole a Seawolf pass and went uncontested the other way for an easy layup. Ally Bates followed with a three-pointer and after the visitors' initial basket of the afternoon, Todd found a cutting Bates for 7-2.

Right away, Todd picked off another pass and went in for the lay-in, as Sonoma State called the day's first timeout with under seven minutes to go. Out of that break, Bates set up Breanne Ha for a three-pointer.

Later, Todd notched her third steal of the period and found a wide-open Ha on the left wing for another triple and Seawolf timeout, up 17-5.

At the end of one quarter, Cal Poly Pomona led 19-7, scoring nine of those points off of seven Sonoma State turnovers, while only committing two of its own. Three of the Broncos' five steals came from Todd, with 15 of their points going down as of the fast-break variety.

CPP was up 29-16 at the second-quarter media timeout, but back-to-back three-pointers cut the Seawolf deficit to single digits again at 31-22. A pair of layups after a Chynna Cochran free throw extended the Seawolf run to 10-1 to make it just a six-point game at 32-26.

Over the last minute, however, CPP managed to score the final six points of the period to still take a double-digit cushion into the locker room, 38-26. Todd hit a pair of free throws, and then incredibly for the third time in the half, stole a pass around her defensive three-point arc and went coast to coast for a basket. The senior forward from San Diego was then credited with her sixth theft of the half, with the ball ending up in the clutches of Sydney Fedinec. The redshirt freshman was fouled and knocked down both of her free throws.

The Broncos scored following all six of Todd's first-half steals, tallying a total of 14 points from them.

Sonoma State scored the first six points of the second half on a Zane Sheckherd three-pointer and a trio of free throws. Villareal and Sheckherd then traded triples, and Sheckherd answered two Ha free throws with a layup to make it 43-37 as CPP head coach Danelle Bishop called a timeout with 6:38 to go in the third.

An 8-1 run by Sonoma State forced another CPP timeout, now up by just one at 46-45 with 2:49 left. The Broncos responded with a Todd bucket, and then a Villareal-assisted right-wing Bates triple. Bates' field goal to beat the buzzer enabled the home side to take a 53-48 advantage into the final quarter.

Todd and Amanda Luckett traded two-point baskets to begin that final stanza, before Fedinec connected on her first three-pointer of the game. James' jumper made it a double-digit cushion again at 60-50.

Coming out of the final media break, Todd notched her ninth steal to achieve that new career high, with the ball winding up in Bates' hands. Bates passed ahead to Fedinec, who in turn found Todd in the paint for yet another easy layup and a 64-52 bulge. Six free throws sealed it.

Ciara James scored three points and turned in game highs of 10 rebounds and a career-best seven blocked shots, increasing her league-leading season total to 46, and her career mark to 82. The seven denials equal the single-game program record, joining Aprile Powell, who turned away seven shots at San Francisco State on Dec. 8, 2000.

Bates added 16 points, four boards and four assists. Ha had eight points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Villareal registered 10 points with a pair of threes, alongside four assists and two boards. Islas contributed three points, two rebounds and an assist in her home finale.

Sheckherd paced Sonoma State with 14 points. Aaryn Pickett joined her in double figures with 11 points. Luckett provided seven points and a team-high nine rebounds off the bench.

Cal Poly Pomona heads north this week for two final regular-season tilts. The Broncos will first take on last-place Cal State Monterey Bay (2-17, 1-14 CCAA) inside The Kelp Bed in Seaside on Thursday night, Feb. 24, at 5:30 p.m., with the men's game to follow at around 7:30 p.m.
