Cal Poly Pomona Settles for Split of Weekend Trip Up North

TURLOCK, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona suffered a tough defeat to Stanislaus State, 65-61, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men's basketball contest Saturday night at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.

With the split of its weekend trip to Northern California, CPP is back to an even 8-8 overall and 4-8 in the CCAA. Stanislaus State improves to 7-10 overall and an identical 4-8 in league play.

Senior guard Phoenix Shackelford produced 16 points to lead all players, going 3-of-7 from long distance and adding four rebounds, two steals and an assist. He has scored in double figures in all 16 games.

Neither team scored until a three-pointer by the home side's Tony Singleton at the 16:56 mark, with the Broncos answering from long range through BJ Standley 52 seconds later. Singleton threw in his second triple on the ensuing Warrior possession to give his squad a 6-3 lead at the initial media timeout.

Shackelford got off the mark with a three for the second of nine tie scores at 6-6. The game also had 10 lead changes. An 8-3 run around the under-12 timeout gave the hosts the upper hand at 14-9.

Coming out of the under-four stoppage tied again at 20-20, CPP got back-to-back buckets by Tavian Henderson and Shackelford to round out a 10-0 run as Stanislaus State called a timeout. Luis Salgado responded with a three-pointer, and a Marlon Short triple with under a minute to go gave the Warriors a 26-24 edge at the break.

The Broncos got the first six points of the second half on a three-point play by Standley and three-pointer by Shackelford following his own steal. Eight Warrior points in succession broke a 41-41 tie ahead of the under-12 timeout.

Later, Henderson's running right-handed bank shot from the left of the paint regained a 54-53 edge for CPP. On the next Bronco possession, Tay Aubry-Thomas rebounded Shackelford's miss and got the put-back to go. Shackelford's technical free throw after a second flopping call against Stanislaus State made it a four-point game with 4:52 left.

It was the duo of Short and Salgado again, though, that brought the Warriors back, connecting on consecutive baskets for 57-57.

Up by just one at 61-60, Singleton missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity, but the Broncos were called for a travel with 48.2 seconds to go. CPP played the next defensive possession straight up, and the Warriors obliged with a traveling violation of their own. The Broncos called a timeout with 26.4 seconds left, but came up empty on that trip.

After Short knocked down a pair of free throws with 12.9 seconds to go, Salgado was called for a foul as Christopher Mitchell gathered a pass from the penetrating Shackelford and took a three-pointer. Mitchell was only able to hit the last of his three tries, however, and Singleton sealed the win with two makes from the stripe.

Henderson and Standley scored nine points apiece, while Chris Gayles Jr. and Caleb Nelson each had seven points off the bench. Henderson dished out a team-best four assists. Standley also had three rebounds, two steals, one assist and a block. Aubry-Thomas collected five points and a team-high six boards.

Salgado and Short led Stanislaus State with 14 points each. Singleton contributed 13 points, and Matt Bender was a fourth Warrior in double digits with 10 points. Benno Zecic produced game highs of nine rebounds, nine assists and four steals.

The Broncos lost despite scoring 25 points off 17 Warrior turnovers, while the home side manufactured just two such points off 11 CPP miscues. Stanislaus State shot 50 percent (11-22) from three-point range.

Cal Poly Pomona continues this season-long four-game road stretch in Southern California in the week ahead, playing at area foe Cal State LA (6-9, 3-6 CCAA) on Thursday night, Feb. 10. Tipoff at University Gym is slated for 7:30 p.m., following the women's game at 5:30 p.m.
