Broncos Grab Victories at Oxy Spring Break Classic

Cal Poly Pomona grabbed multiple wins after splitting the weekend at the Ben Brown Invite on Friday and the Oxy Spring Break Classic on Saturday.
 
On Saturday, CPP went 1-2-3 in the 400-meter dash with Ryan Fields winning the event. He clocked in at 47.98 seconds, the 10th-fastest time in Bronco history and a new personal-best time for Fields. Camden Patterson followed in 48.86 seconds, while Kaelin Moore took third in 49.39 seconds. Kevin Mlynek also finished in the top-10, placing seventh in 50.05 seconds.
 
The Broncos also swept the shot put, with Alejandro Sandoval-Guzman posting a new personal-best 15.11-meter throw on his first attempt. Gerardo Flores took second with a mark of 15.03 meters, while Aaron May grabbed third (14.81 meters) and Thomas Tuff finished fourth (14.36 meters).
 
Similarly, CPP took the top-four spots in the discus throw as well. May won the event with a 45.69-meter throw on his third attempt, while Khai Redd took second with a throw of 44.05 meters.  Sandoval-Guzman followed in third at 43.65 meters and Dominique Navarrette took fourth with a heave of 43.50 meters.
 
Nicholas Albro won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:17.67. While not a personal best time, it marks Albro's first win of his collegiate career.
 
Three Broncos finished in the top-10 of the 100-meter dash, led by Joshua Johnson's fourth-place time of 10.92 seconds. Alessio Sommacal clocked in at 11.06 for seventh and Deandre Smith followed just .04 seconds behind him for eighth (11.10 seconds).
 
Kristian Kimberlin took fourth overall in the 800-meter event, crossing the finish line in 1:55.13, while Jalen Jenkins finished in 1:58.05.
 
Friday at the Ben Brown Invite, May took 12th overall in the hammer with a throw of 50.26 meters. It was his first attempt in the event and was the best throw amongst non-NCAA Division I athletes.
 
Sandoval-Guzman followed in 16th with a throw of 43.82 meters, while Tuff was right behind him in 40.63 meters (17th). Navarrette (19th, 39.93 meters) and Redd (20th, 38.22 meters) rounded out the Broncos in the event.
 
In the javelin, Gabriel Zapata took 17th overall with a throw of 42.19 meters.
 
Next week, CPP heads to local foe Azusa Pacific University for the Franzen Invitational.
