CPP Goes Big at Franson Classic

Cal Poly Pomona had a busy day at the Franson Classic, hosted by Azusa Pacific University, Saturday and saw multiple victories, including one record broken.
 
Ryan Fields won the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 51.25 seconds (provisional mark), which not only shattered his previous best time (52.08 seconds) but also broke the CPP record and is the second-fastest time in NCAA Division II so far this season. Kaelin Moore followed in third place with a time of 53.31 and Jaelen Craft came in just .08 seconds after to take fourth. Derek Porter finished seventh with a time of 56.60 seconds and Nnamdi Onwaeze took ninth in 58.08 seconds.
 
The Broncos dominated the 110-meter hurdles, with three Broncos finishing in the top-four and five in the top-10. Fields won the event with a time of 14.09 seconds, which was .10 seconds faster than his previous best time and moved him up to third on the Bronco all-time list. Onwaeze followed in 14.19 for second. Alessio Sommacal took fourth in 14.41 seconds and Gabriel Zapata grabbed sixth with a time of 14.68 seconds. Moore rounded out the Broncos in the top-10 with an eighth-place finish in 14.81 seconds.
 
Joshua Johnson won the 100-meter dash in 10.80 seconds with fellow Bronco Deandre Smith right on his tail at 10.82 seconds. Bryce Bushnell clocked in at 10.84 seconds for fourth place.
 
Johnson also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.46 seconds, which is just outside the top-10 of the CPP record book. Sommacal took fifth in 21.99 seconds.
 
Vincent Sarino won the 1500-meter run, clocking in at 3:55.43. Kristian Kimberlin followed in 3:57.55 to take third, while Leandro Candray also grabbed a top-10 finish in 4:00.74.
 
Aaron May posted a second-place finish in the discus after hurling the disc 49.54 meters on his second attempt. Alejandro Sandoval-Guzman took fourth with a throw of 48.13 meters, while Thomas Tuff finished seventh and Gerardo Flores took eighth with respective throws of 44.64 and 43.88 meters.
 
Jalen Jenkins led a trio of Broncos in the top-10 of the 400-meter dash, taking third with a time of 49.01 seconds. Camden Patterson was right on his tail, clocking in at 49.16 seconds for fourth, while Kevin Mlynek took sixth in 49.69 seconds.
 
The 4x100 relay team of Bushnell, Johnson, Sommacal and Smith won the event with a time of 41.47 seconds.
 
Kailen Smith won the high jump after being the only competitor to clear 2.00 meters. Deandre Smith grabbed fourth in the long jump with a mark of 6.78 meters on his second attempt. Isaiah Galloway took seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 13.21 meters.
 
Matteo Madrassi finished in third after clearing 4.60 meters in the pole vault. Dylan Chung took fifth with a mark of 4.45 meters and Aaron Rodriguez grabbed seventh at 4.30 meters.
 
Sandoval-Guzman led a pack of Broncos in the top-10 of the shot put, finishing in fourth with a throw of 15.52 meters. May took fifth with a throw of 15.28 meters, while Flores tied for sixth with a mark of 14.99 meters. Khai Redd and Dominique Navarrette rounded out the top-10 with respective throws of 14.66 and 14.17 meters.
 
Flores led the Broncos in the hammer throw with a fourth-place finish. He posted a throw of 45.13 meters, followed by Tuff's 43.25 meters. Sandoval-Guzman took sixth with a 42.69-meter hurl, while Redd finished with a 37.45-meter throw for seventh.
 
David Dahl took sixth in the 3K steeplechase with a time of 10:15.82. Trevor Benson and Nicholas Albro took sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 800-meter run. Benson finished in 1:57.39, while Albro crossed the finish line in 1:57.53.
 
CPP capped the day with the 5k and saw Diego Duran take fifth in 14:55.93. Christian Coley placed sixth with a time of 15:04.03.
 
The Broncos head to the Titus and Ely Meet, hosted by Concordia University of Irvine, next Saturday.
