ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona overturned a 5-2 deficit through a five-run fifth, but allowed three unearned scores in the seventh and fell to Sonoma State University, 8-7, in the finale of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) baseball series at Seawolf Diamond on Sunday.
With the result, CPP dropped to 15-14 overall and 10-9 in the CCAA. Sonoma State improved to 8-17 overall and 5-11 in league play. The teams split the set, as the Broncos had won the first two games of the weekend in shutout fashion, 8-0 in 11 frames and 13-0, before the host Seawolves took Saturday's seven-inning doubleheader nightcap, 7-1.
The visitors struck first for a pair in the initial frame.
Jacob Lopez led off the contest by drawing a five-pitch base on balls and moved to third on a one-out bunt single by
Cesar Lopez and an infield error. With Broncos at the corners and still one gone,
Ricky Nuñez lined an opposite-field double into the gap in right center to plate both runners.
Junior designated hitter Otis Statum's fourth home run of the year opened the home third and put the Seawolves on the board. A two-out RBI double by Josh Medina later tied the game at 2-2.
Sonoma State surged ahead with a three-run fourth, getting a leadoff single and back-to-back one-out walks to load the bases ahead of a balk and two-run single by Logan Douglas, who fouled off eight
Eric Romo pitches around a ball before sending his hit up the middle.
CPP regained the lead through a five-run fifth. The Broncos got two runs back to pull within one on RBI singles through the left side by
Cesar Lopez with one away, and
Ryon Knowles with two gone. Sophomore shortstop
Nick Lugo and third-year freshman third baseman
Tyler Chaffee came through with RBI singles of their own to go up, 6-5.
A double steal then accounted for the fifth tally, as Chaffee tried for second to draw catcher Cole Brodnansky's throw, and Lugo slid home underneath Brodnansky's tag on the throw back.
Scott Armstrong took over for Romo to begin the home fifth and after surrendering an opposite-field double to right center to Braeden Holliday and a five-pitch walk to Josh Lopez, the junior right-hander got Sean Pauly to swing through an 0-2 toss, and Brodnansky to ground out to Lugo for the huge shutdown frame the hard way.
An infield error and wild pitch led off the home seventh and preceded an RBI double to left center by Medina that made it a one-run game. Following a walk to Holliday and a pitching change,
Cesar Lopez caught Josh Lopez's deep fly ball up against the wall in right center for the first out as both Seawolf runners advanced, and an RBI groundout by pinch-hitter Jared Esparza leveled the score. A wild pitch plated Holliday from third for what would prove to be the game-winning run.
Edrian Rangel went 3.0 innings and allowed three runs on five hits and no walks, with one strikeout. The true freshman southpaw put together a perfect first after being handed the quick 2-0 lead. Armstrong (1-4) posted a 1-2-3 sixth, but took the loss.
Matt Orozco set down the Seawolves in order in the eighth with a pair of strikeouts.
Cesar Lopez finished 3-for-5 with his league-leading 15th double, two runs and one RBI. Nuñez was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Knowles went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Jacob Lopez scored twice.
Blake Janowicz gave up four runs on five hits and one walk over 4.1 frames, striking out five to equal his season high. The freshman right-hander tossed a 1-2-3 second. Sophomore right-hander Tanner Fonoti (1-2) set down the Broncos in order in the sixth, and again in the ninth, and earned his first winning decision at Sonoma State. He ultimately went a season-long 4.2 innings and fanned three. Medina was 2-for-4 with his two RBI doubles and run scored.
With the CCAA consisting of 11 teams, Cal Poly Pomona is the idle side next weekend, and will return to action at home against San Francisco State University the following Friday, April 8. The matinee opener of another four-gamer is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch at Scolinos Field.
