LONG BEACH, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona competed against a heavy NCAA Division I field at the Beach Opener, hosted by Long Beach State, Friday and Saturday.
Aaron May highlighted Friday's action after taking eighth in the javelin with a throw of 51.26 meters.
Ryan Fields won both of his events to highlight Saturday. Fields crossed first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.29 seconds and took first in the 400m hurdles after posting a time of 52.92 seconds.
Alessio Sommacal followed in 14.55 seconds to take third in the 110m hurdles, while
Kaelin Moore grabbed third and
Jaelen Craft took fourth in the 400m hurdles with respective times of 55.29 and 55.80 seconds.
Kailen Smith took second overall in the high jump, posting a mark of 2.06 meters on his first attempt, beating out an opponent from USC and jumping into the top-10 all-time leaderboard at CPP.
Gerwin DeHaan tied for fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 4.68 meters, while
Dylan Chung followed in seventh at 4.38m.
Vincent Sarino took fourth in the 1500m race with a time of 3:55.84 and the team of
Bryce Bushnell,
Joshua Johnson, Sommacal, and
Deandre Smith grabbed third in the 4x100m race with a cumulative time of 41.64 seconds. Johnson also took sixth in the 200m event with a time of 22.23 seconds.
Aaron May took 17
th overall but second amongst NCAA Division II athletes with a 46.18-meter throw in the discus. Dominique Navarrette (45.17m) and
Khai Redd (44.21m) grabbed 20
th and 21
st, respectively.
Camden Patterson finished in the top-10 of the 400-meter race, grabbing seventh with a time of 49.82 seconds.
Jalen Jenkins also had a top-10 finish, taking 10
th in 50.40.
Deandre Smith posted a 6.64m mark in the long jump, which was good for 11
th overall. Alejandro Sandoval-Guzman took 11
th in the shot put with a throw of 14.95m, while May (14.63m) and
Gerardo Flores (14.60m) took 15
th and 16
th, respectively.
CPP's 4x400 relay teams closed out the event with the team of Fields, Patterson, Johnson and Moore taking third (3:17.75).
The Broncos head to the Ben Brown Invitational next weekend in Fullerton, Calif.
