POMONA - Cal Poly Pomona was announced Sunday night as the No. 7 seed for the 2022 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball West Regional. The Broncos' California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rival, Cal State San Bernardino, will serve as the host of the eight-team event on its campus inside Coussoulis Arena Friday through Monday, March 11-14. CPP (13-9) takes on second-seeded and eighth-ranked CCAA regular-season champion CSUSB (23-3) in the second regional quarterfinal at 2:30 p.m. this Friday, March 11.

FREE ADMISSION FOR BRONCOS!
All members of the Cal Poly Pomona student body, faculty and staff will get free admission to the games this week if they show a valid CPP ID card, courtesy of CPP Athletics!

THE SCHEDULE
Friday's regional quarterfinals will begin with third-seeded and 15th-ranked Chico State (19-4) against No. 6 seed Academy of Art (20-11) at 12 p.m. The 'Cats are at-large entrants, while ART U defeated Azusa Pacific, 73-70, in the final of the Pacific West Conference (PacWest) Tournament in Fresno on Saturday afternoon, to hoist that trophy for the first time and grab the PacWest's automatic qualifier. Top-seeded and ninth-ranked Cal State San Marcos (20-4), the first-time CCAA Tournament champion and thus the league's automatic entrant, takes on No. 8 seed Alaska (12-14) at 5 p.m. The Nanooks rather remarkably won four games in four days last week in Washington to earn an improbable Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship title as the No. 10 seed, and like CSUSM, earn an automatic berth. Fourth-seeded Point Loma (21-9) faces fifth-seeded Azusa Pacific (20-9) to round out Friday's action at 7:30 p.m., in a showdown of PacWest foes and at-large participants. Friday winners will play in semifinals on Saturday, March 12, at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. CPP would play in the first semi should it advance. The regional final on Monday, March 14, tips off at 7 p.m.

NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Cal Poly Pomona went 6-1 in February and won its last five regular-season games to qualify for a fourth straight NCAA Championship field and eighth in the last nine years, not including the 2020-21 season during which the CCAA did not compete. The Broncos were to be the No. 3 seed for the 2020 West Regional at UC San Diego, but that entire event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic the day before the first round on March 12, 2020. The Broncos are 24-14 (.632) all-time in 16 NCAA Division II postseason appearances, including 20-11 in 13 trips under 22nd-year head coach Greg Kamansky. Kamansky guided Cal Poly Pomona to the 2009-10 national title in Springfield, Mass., after a runner-up finish there in 2008-09. The Broncos are five-time West Region champions.

THE BRONCOS
Phoenix Shackelford is the lone Bronco to start all 22 games this season, and has scored in double figures in every one. The first-time All-CCAA First Team selection has appeared in all 110 contests that CPP has played since he arrived on campus ahead of the 2017-18 season, and currently leads the squad in scoring at 16.5 points per game, which ranks third in the CCAA. Dane Erikstrup, a 6-foot-10 true freshman, is the program's first CCAA Freshman of the Year since Shackelford, and is second on the team at 11.6 points per game. Tavian Henderson was selected to the All-CCAA Second Team, and paces CPP at 7.7 rebounds per game to go along with 8.2 points per outing. His next point will be his milestone 800th as a collegian. The Broncos' third senior, BJ Standley, averages 8.9 points and a team-best 3.6 assists per game. He (1,050) and Shackelford (1,168) have both eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for their college careers this season, with 581 of Standley's haul coming over his first two years at Saint Martin's. The Broncos boast the 17th-best scoring defense in Division II, allowing 64.4 points per game.

ABOUT THE YOTES
No. 8 Cal State San Bernardino dropped an 85-71 decision to Cal State San Marcos in Arcata on Saturday in the championship game of the CCAA Tournament, and thus accepted an at-large berth into the NCAA tourney. First-time CCAA Coach of the Year Andy Newman guided the Yotes to their first CCAA regular-season banner since 2013-14, in his fourth season in charge. The roster features CCAA Newcomer of the Year Brandon Knapper, fellow All-CCAA First Team pick Daytone Jennings, and CCAA Defensive Player of the Year Darius Lubom. Knapper leads the league in scoring at 21.3 points per game. CSUSB tops the CCAA as a team in both scoring offense (86.9 points per game) and scoring margin (13.9). The Yotes rank 12th and 14th in the nation, respectively, in those categories, as well as fourth in rebound margin (9.4). CSUSB is a perfect 10-0 inside Coussoulis Arena this season.

THE SERIES
CPP lost the lone regular-season meeting with then-21st-ranked CSUSB, 83-62, in San Bernardino on Nov. 27. The game in Pomona scheduled for Jan. 2, was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols. CPP is 36-28 in the all-time series that dates back to 1989-90, including 13-18 in San Bernardino. The Broncos are 23-21 against the Yotes under Kamansky (8-13 at CSUSB). CPP was swept in the 2019-20 season series, with both defeats in overtime by three total points, and has lost five of seven to CSUSB after winning seven straight matchups.

CPP and CSUSB have twice faced off in the NCAA postseason, both since Kamansky took the helm and with the Broncos winning each in overtime. The first such meeting was on March 17, 2003, in the regional final in Laie, Hawaii, with CPP winning 91-84 in double overtime. The Broncos then also downed the Yotes in Bellingham, Wash., 83-81, in a regional quarterfinal on March 13, 2009.

CPP VS. THE FIELD
Cal Poly Pomona has gone 2-3 this season against the West Regional field. In addition to the loss at Cal State San Bernardino, the Broncos split two matchups with Chico State, with both teams winning on the road, and dropped their only date with Cal State San Marcos in Pomona. CPP knocked off Azusa Pacific, 73-61, at home on the second day of the campaign back on Nov. 13. The Broncos have never faced ART U.

UP NEXT
The 2022 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship consists of 64 teams divided into eight regions. The eight regional champions move on to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind., for the national quarterfinals on March 23, semifinals on March 24, and the national championship game on March 26.
