POMONA -- Cal Poly Pomona's
Dom Navarrette-Perez had a day in the discus circle he will never forget, and it earned him California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Field Athlete of the Week honors for the week of Mar. 28-Apr 4, it was announced by the conference office Tuesday.
The sophomore from Merced posted a mark of 167-6 (51.06) to win the event at the Chabot Invitational. His mark also earned Navarrette-Perez a NCAA Provisional Qualifying Standard and the seventh spot in the CPP record book. He now leads the CCAA and ranks 13th in all of NCAA Division II.
Navarrette-Perez also posted a personal record in the hammer with a throw of 148-0 (45.13). He placed fourth in the event, and he leads the CCAA in the discus by over four feet.
Navarrette-Perez ranks fifth in the CCAA in the hammer (148-1/45.13m) and eighth in the shot put (47-8.5 (14.54).
This is the first-career CCAA weekly honor for Navarrette-Perez. It is also the second straight week a CPP men's track and field student-athlete has earned the top weekly honor; teammate
Gabriel Zapata earned the same award last week.
Despite glowing success among NCAA Division I competition this weekend in the Bay Area, the CPP men's track and field team fell to No. 17 in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division II
national rankings this week, but remained the top-ranked team in the
regional rankings.
Cal Poly Pomona will travel to La Jolla for the Triton Invitational on Saturday, April 9.
