LA JOLLA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona took on a heavily competitive field at the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego, and still saw lots of improvement across the board.
Alessio Sommacal grabbed a runner-up finish in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.18 seconds, shaving .08 seconds off his previous best time to move up to fourth on the Broncos' all-time list and sit second on the NCAA Division II performance list.
Gabriel Zapata finished fifth in 14.61 seconds.
Jalen Jenkins finished fourth in the 400-meter race with a time of 47.77 seconds, followed by
Camden Patterson in 49.43 seconds.
Joshua Johnson took sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.65 seconds, just outside the Bronco all-time list.
Bryce Bushnell followed in 10.84 seconds.
Derek Porter clocked in at 56.20 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles, winning his heat by over a second and a half.
The Bronco 4x100 relay team of Bushnell, Johnson, Sommacal and
Deandre Smith finished second overall with a time of 41.48 seconds. CPP's 4x400 team also took second in 3:17.69.
Aaron May posted a top-10 finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 54.02 meters. Alejandro Sandoval-Guzman followed with a throw of 44.15 meters.
May also led the Broncos in the discus with a throw of 50.38 meters, putting him ninth on the CPP record book and just .07 meters away from an NCAA Division II provisional mark. Sandoval-Guzman followed with a mark of 49.30 meters.
Sandoval-Guzman was the highest-finishing Bronco in the shot put with a 15.89-meter throw (10
th). It breaks him into the top-10 of the CPP record book and is currently the second-best throw in all of NCAA Division II.
Gerardo Flores finished in 12
th place with a personal-best heave of 15.86 meters – the third-best throw in NCAA Division II.
Dylan Chung and
Aaron Rodriguez both finished in the top-10 of the pole vault. Chung took sixth with a mark of 4.40 meters, while Rodriguez followed in eighth at 4.25 meters.
Isaiah Galloway finished 10
th in the triple jump, clearing 13.02 meters on his second attempt.
Donovan Robinson wasn't far behind, posting a jump of 12.73 meters on his third try.
Nicholas Albro finished the 1500-meter race in 4:02.22, followed by
Christian Coley in 4:03.30.
Trevor Benson clocked in at 1:58.37 in the 800-meter race.
David Dahl finished 10
th in the 3K steeplechase with a time of 10:05.48.
The Broncos look to keep improving as they head to the Bryan Clay Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays next week, April 13-16.
