Deandre Smith and
Leandro Candray earned Top 3 finishes in their events to highlight day two of the conference meet at Cox Stadium in San Francisco.
After 6 of 21 events scored, Cal Poly Pomona will enter the third and final day in second place in the team standings with 61 points, trailing the team leader Chico State (87.50 points) by 26.5 points.

Kailen Smith became the first individual CCAA champion in the High Jump for CPP since 2013 – and just the third since 1989 – getting over the bar at 2.07 meters, a new personal-best, scoring 10 points towards the Broncos' team total. In the same event,
Donovan Robinson placed fifth with a mark of 1.87m to give CPP four additional points.
Deandre Smith earned All-CCAA honors in the Long Jump, earning the silver medal after his first attempt ended up being his best attempt, a leap of 6.69 meters. The runner-up finish earns the Broncos eight points in the team standings.
Leandro Candray ended the day scoring six points for the Broncos with a third place finish in the 10,000 meter race, crossing the line in 30:19.75 for All-CCAA honors.
Zapata opened the second day of Decathlon competition with a victory in the 110m Hurdles, crossing the line in 15.58. He then posted a personal-best mark in the Discus, a toss of 31.40m, but finished fourth. He then suffered a setback, missing on all three attempts at 3.10 meters in the Pole Vault, failing to register a height. He redeemed himself in the next event to lead the Javelin with a mark of 48.63m on his final attempt, but he ran out of gas in the final Decathlon event, the 1500m Run, crossing the line last in a time of 5:29.85. Zapata finished fourth overall in the Decathlon with 5,541 points to give the Broncos five team points. Meanwhile,
Dylan Chung took fifth overall in the event, scoring 4,981 points for four team points.
Vincent Sarino secured a spot in the 1500m final on Saturday after running a 4:00.97 in his preliminary race Friday.
Six Broncos will occupy the eight spots in the finals of Saturday's 110m Hurdles after
Alessio Sommacal,
Nnamdi Onwaeze,
Kaelin Moore,
Derek Porter,
Jaelen Craft and Zapata all qualified in the prelims.
In the 400m prelims,
Camden Patterson and
Jalen Jenkins advanced to Saturday's final, placing third and fourth, respectively, in Friday's qualifier. In the 100m prelims,
Joshua Johnson (10.60),
Bryce Bushnell (10.61) and
Deandre Smith all ran personal-best times and qualified for Saturday's final as well.
Kristian Kimberlin ran to a fourth-place finish in the 800m qualifier, crossing the line in 1:55.30.
All four Broncos in the 400m Hurdles qualifier advanced to the finals;
Ryan Fields won the prelims with a time of 53.39, while Moore (54.66) took second, Craft (54.87) took fourth and Porter (57.21) captured the eighth spot in Saturday's final.
All four Broncos competing in the 200m qualifier also advanced to Saturday's final. Johnson won the prelims with a personal-best time of 21.39 as Bushnell (21.87) took fifth, Patterson (21.92) was sixth and Sommacal (22.10) earned the eighth and final spot in Saturday's race.
The third and final day of the 2022 CCAA Track & Field Championships will get underway Saturday at 9:30 am with the Triple Jump and Discus events. Track events will start at 1:40 pm with the 4x100 Relay.
