SAN FRANCISCO – For the first time since 1998, the Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field team are CCAA champions! With 277 points, the Broncos earned the team title for just the fourth time in the program's 58-year history.

Cal State San Marcos finished third with 114.50 points, followed by Cal State LA (88), Cal Poly Humboldt (48), Stanislaus State (34), Cal State East Bay (4) and San Francisco State (3).

In all, the Broncos captured eight individual titles, which is the most for CPP in one conference meet since at least 1981 -- Kailen Smith (High Jump), Aaron May (Discus), Alejandro Sandoval Guzman (Shot Put), Alessio Sommacal (110m Hurdles), Matteo Madrassi (Pole Vault), Joshua Johnson (100m, 200m) and Ryan Fields (400m Hurdles).

Also, the Broncos earned 29 All-CCAA awards for finishing in the Top 3 of individual events and/or relays.

Beginning the third and final day, it was all Broncos on the podium of the Discus event as Aaron May (49.02m), Dom Navarrette-Perez (48.98m) and Alejandro Sandoval Guzman (47.40m) placed first, second and third, respectively. Together with seventh and eighth place finishes by Khai Redd (43.27m) and Gerardo Flores (42.76m), the Broncos combined for 27 points in the event alone.

The success continued for the Bronco throwers in the Shot Put as Sandoval Guzman captured the individual title with a personal-record throw of 16.04 meters, moving him to No. 9 at CPP all-time in the event. It was also the first CCAA individual champion in the Shot Put for CPP since at least 1989. Flores also earned All-CCAA recognition for a runner-up finish after his final attempt went 15.10 meters. May, Navarrette-Guzman, Alex Probolsky and Redd also placed in the Top 8 as the Broncos combined for 29 more team points.

Kailen Smith began where he left off yesterday on the heels of an individual High Jump title, earning a second-place finish in the Triple Jump. He did so without having competed in the event at the collegiate level prior to this weekend. With his jump of 14.16 meters comes eight points towards the team standings and another All-CCAA honor for himself. Alessio Sommacal earned five points with his fourth place finish on a leap of 14.02 meters, also his first-ever meet competing in the event. Isaiah Galloway grabbed two points for a seventh place finish, making a leap of 13.23 meters.

Ending the field events, Matteo Madrassi captured the individual title in the Pole Vault, getting over the 4.98 meter bar.

At the start of the track events, CPP's 4x100 Relay Team of Bryce Bushnell, Alessio Sommacal, Joshua Johnson and Deandre Smith took second place with a school-record time of 40.76, breaking the 15-year-old record by one-tenth of a second. The finish scored eight team points for CPP.

Nicholas Albro earned a silver medal in the 3000 meter Steeplechase, running the event in 9:24.46 for eight Bronco points. Chris Razo scored four points with a fifth place finish in a time of 9:27.80.

After 11 of the 21 events scored, Cal Poly Pomona led the meet with 152 points, while Chico State trailed with 127.50 points and Cal State San Marcos in third with 64.50 points. It only took one event for Chico State to take a half-point lead after 12 events.

The Broncos retook the lead and never looked back when Sommacal and Nnamdi Onwaeze went first and second in the 100 meter Hurdles. Sommacal ran a personal-record 14.15 while Onwaeze crossed the line in 14.28. In all, CPP scored 27points in the event with Jaelen Craft, Gabriel Zapata and Derek Porter all finishing.
