CCAA RELEASE

SAN MARCOS, Calif. --
The Cal Poly Pomona Department of Intercollegiate Athletics finished third in the 2021-22 Robert J. Hiegert Commissioner's Cup standings, the announcement was made at the CCAA's annual spring Executive Council meetings on Wednesday in San Marcos.

As a collective group, the Broncos scored 86.40 points, less than six points behind Cup champion Chico State (92.05), which took home the trophy for the first time since 2017-18.  Cal State San Marcos earned runner-up honors, tallying less than half a point behind Chico State with 91.79 points.

The award, named in honor of former long-time Commissioner and CCAA Hall of Famer, Robert J. Hiegert, is given to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) member institution with the highest aggregate ranking in eight of the CCAA's 13 championship sports.  An institution's Hiegert Cup ranking is calculated using its top two Conference finishes in the fall, winter, and spring sports seasons, as well as the next two highest finishes, regardless of season. The specific number points garnered per sport is determined by the number of institutions that sponsor the sport.

Placing fourth and fifth in the 2021-22 Hiegert Cup standings behind Chico State, Cal State San Marcos and CPP was Cal State LA (74.52) and Sonoma State (71.91), respectively, rounding out the Top 5.  The rest of the standings for this year's Cup can be found below.

"It was an honor to be back on the field presenting the Hiegert Cup once again," said CCAA Commissioner Mitch Cox. "The competition this season showed how much of a battle our conference is in every sport. We had eight different universities win conference championships, and you saw how close (the commissioner's cup point total) was at the end. Teams can't take a day off in this conference."

Nine of the 11 Cal Poly Pomona intercollegiate teams reached the postseason in 2021-22, contributing to CPP's third-place finish.  Highlighting the Broncos' efforts in the overall points standings was men's and women's outdoor track and field, as both teams won the CCAA championship for the first time since 1998 to earn CPP 26 combined points.  Baseball had the next-highest point total with 12.2 after earning a second-place finish in the regular season standings and capturing an extra point with the CCAA tournament title.  Both men's soccer and volleyball tallied 11.9 points -- both teams placed second in the regular season standings -- and men's cross country rounded out the scoring for CPP with 11.5 points for their runner-up finish in the championship meet in the fall.

The 2021-22 academic year was a very successful one in competition for Cal Poly Pomona athletics, as it produced 16 All-Americans, 32 All-West Region selections, 79 All-CCAA award winners, and 42 CCAA Athlete of the Week honorees, in addition to all of the recognition for excellence in the classroom.
