POMONA -- Cal Poly Pomona's
Ryon Knowles added one more award to his impressive list of career accolades as he was selected for the Gold Glove at second base on the 2022 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division II Team.
Knowles earned his spot on this exclusive list, which includes just nine student-athletes in Division II (one per position), by posting a .991 fielding percentage and helping the Broncos pace the CCAA in nearly every defensive statistic. Knowles was involved in 29 double plays and had just two errors in 211 chances.
The Corona native was no slouch with the bat, either. Knowles hit .368, driving in 47 runs and posting a .480 on-base percentage. He ranked in the top 10 in the CCAA in hits (third, 74), batting average (eighth), runs batted in (tenth, 47), runs scored (fifth, 57), walks (fifth, 35), and OPS (seventh, 1.042).
The graduate student was a key factor in Cal Poly Pomona's run to win the CCAA Baseball Tournament. The Broncos swept through the tournament, winning three straight games to take home the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA West Regional. From his leadoff position, Knowles hit .308 with three runs scored and six RBI to earn all-tournament honors.
Knowles is the first CPP baseball student-athlete since 2011 to earn a Gold Glove (short stop Mike Santora and outfielder Travis Taijeron earned the honor back in 2011). Knowles is also the first CCAA student-athlete to earn an ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove since Chico State's Jimbo Pernetti collected the honor as a first baseman in 2017. The last CCAA student-athlete to earn the honor as a second baseman was Cal State San Bernardino's Kevin Meriwether in 2014.
