SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Samantha Aguilar was the top team finisher for the sixth time in her career, placing 20th overall out of 187 competitors to lead the Cal Poly Pomona women's cross country team to a sixth place finish out of 17 teams Saturday morning at the 15th Annual Cougar Challenge, hosted by Cal State San Marcos.
Aguilar ran the six-kilometer course in 22:08.1, finishing 80 seconds behind individual champion and reigning CCAA and NCAA West Region champion Kaela Dishion of Stanislaus State, who came across the line 20 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
Arissa Hatcher (22:46.4) placed 38th overall, followed by
Vivian Martinez (22:48.6) in 41st,
Bridget Edwards (22:58.2) in 50th,
Svetlana Martin (23:14.9) in 60th place to round out the team scoring of 195 points. Martin's time was a new personal-best, shaving eight seconds off her previous PR for a 6K.
Angela Arellano (23:24.7) took 70th place,
Paige Moore (23:25.5) 73rd,
Alisa Moradian (23:32.0) 80th,
Victoria Escanuelas (23:49.6) 89th and
Julia Butler (24:28.0) 106th.
Stanislaus State won the team title with 28 points, thanks to its top three finishers going 1-2-3 across the line. Chico State (47 points), Azusa Pacific (67), Pomona-Pitzer (123) and Cal State San Marcos (174) all placed ahead of CPP with 195 points.
Cal Poly Pomona will head to the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in Claremont in two weeks on Saturday, Oct. 8. The women's race on the Pomona College Campus Course is set to begin at 8:30 am.
