Broncos Earn Sweep In Epic Battle With Sea Lions

SAN DIEGO -- Daisy Duke rattled 15 kills into the floor and Madison Novak added 14 more as the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team earned a gritty, hard-fought, three-set victory over host Point Loma to wrap up play at the Seaside Invitational at Golden Gymnasium in San Diego.

The Broncos have won five straight since losing their season-opener, improving to 5-1 this season. The Sea Lions fell to 4-3.

The match featured 34 ties and 14 lead changes in the 96-minute affair, but CPP would find itself on the winning end of each set. In the opening frame, neither team led by more than three points, finally knotting up at 16-16. The Broncos turned on the jets at that point, scoring the next eight points to force set point. The Sea Lions snagged a point thanks to an unforced error by the Broncos, but then Duke put the set away with her fifth kill of the afternoon to give CPP the 25-17 win, perhaps the easiest of the day.

The next set proved to be much tougher as neither team could pull away. Point Loma, though, would break through to lead 23-21, and then hold set point at 24-22, but Cal Poly Pomona dug deep, getting a kill from Novak and a service ace by Avery Percival to even the score up at 24-all. PLNU's Claire Smith found hardwood with a kill to give the hosts another look at set point, but Duke tallied one of her kills to again tie the score at 25-25, then Kaitlan Tucker assisted on consecutive blocks to give the Broncos a two-set lead with the 27-25 win.

The third and what would be the final set, neither team would lead by more than two points until PLNU took leads of 20-17 and 21-18. CPP strung together four straight points -- two Duke kills and two Sea Lion unforced errors -- to warrant a Sea Lion timeout. PLNU scored out of the timeout to tie the set up at 22-22, but a Sea Lion service error, and two more kills from Duke allowed CPP to score three of the next four points to win 25-23 and steal a sweep.

Duke and Novak combined for 29 of the team's 43 kills while Samantha Campion chipped in with double-digit kills (10), and Caitie Mueller assisted on 40 of the 43 kills. Mackenzie Sullivan led the defensive effort for the Broncos, registering 20 digs, and Tucker turned away seven attacks.

Point Loma was led by the 16 kills of Abigail Nua.

Cal Poly Pomona will open conference play on Friday at Cal State Monterey Bay. First serve from the Otter Sports Center is set for 5:00 pm.
