No. 20 Broncos Defeat Pioneers To Extend Hot Streak

POMONA – The 20th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team continued its incredible start to the 2022 campaign, sweeping Cal State East Bay in three sets (25-15, 25-18, 25-23) on Friday evening at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.

The Broncos have now won 13 consecutive matches, rising to 13-1 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the CCAA. The Pioneers, which entered the contest tied for second in the conference standings, lost just their second match of the season, falling to 12-3 overall and 5-2 in league play.

In the opening frame, Cal State East Bay looked destined for an upset, taking an 8-3 lead early. However, Cal Poly Pomona went on a tear, outscoring the visitors 15-3 over the next 18 points to grab momentum that carried the Broncos to a 25-15 win in the first set, followed by a 25-18 triumph in the second set to take a 2-0 match lead.

The third set was an entirely different story. The Pioneers were in control for much of the game, jumping out to an 18-12 lead. That's when the Broncos came roaring back, forcing a 20-20 tie before eventually five of the next eight points to clinch the match victory.

Daisy Duke again led the attack, scoring 12 kills for a .400 hitting percentage. Kaitlan Tucker added eight kills with four blocks on defense, and Kylie Brandt chipped in with seven kills. Avery Percival served a match-high three aces, all of which came on back-to-back-to-back serves in the third set to help CPP turn the tide in its favor late. Mackenzie Sullivan led all players with 16 digs and Erin McFarland assisted on four blocks.

Cal State East Bay was led by the 11 kills off the hands of Lexi Pagani.

Cal Poly Pomona returns to action Saturday afternoon at home in Kellogg Arena against Cal State San Marcos. First serve is set for 2:00 pm.
