LOS ANGELES – Ally Bates and
Alicia Jones combined for 50 points, but the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team suffered an 86-76 loss at Cal State LA on Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles.
The Broncos fall to 12-6 overall and 9-5 in the CCAA. The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, rise to 13-6 (10-4 CCAA).
Cal State LA jumped out to an early lead, but CPP rallied to take its largest lead of the game at 23-16 with 7:04 left in the second quarter. The hosts then went on a 12-0 run over the next 90 seconds to lead 28-23, but both teams traded buckets until the end of the half which resulted in CSULA holding a narrow 38-36 lead.
Jones hit a jumper with 3:18 in the third quarter to make it 49-48 in favor of CSULA, but CSULA turned on the jets and went on a 20-6 run over the next six minutes to take a lead that the Broncos could not overcome, despite getting within six points with four minutes left in regulation.
Bates' 26 points was one point off her career-best, matching a career-high in field goals made with 10 (out of 16 attempts). She was also 5 of 9 from beyond the arc. Jones set a new CPP best with her 24 points on 12 of 23 shooting.
Breanne Ha chipped in with 15 points as the trio scored 65 of the team's 76 points on Saturday.
Ciara James grabbed 13 rebounds, two shy of her career best while rejecting three shots.
As a team, the Broncos hit on 44.0 percent of their shots (33 of 75) while the Golden Eagles made 47.2 percent of their shots (34-72).
Lily Buggs for CSULA led the hosts with 22 points and nine rebounds.
Cal Poly Pomona will next head north to the Bay Area to face Cal State East Bay on Thursday at 5:00 pm before flying back down to take on fourth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
