Singh it Loud! No. 13 CPP Tops SSU to Remain Undefeated Through First CCAA Weekend

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - A first collegiate two-goal brace by Jakob Singh within a span of 5:10 late in the first half was enough to lift the No. 13 Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team over Sonoma State University, 3-1, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match at Seawolf Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.

A fifth successive victory improves CPP to a still-unbeaten 6-0-2 overall and a perfect 2-0 in the CCAA. Sonoma State dropped to 2-5-2 overall and 0-2 in league play.

The first decent scoring opportunity by either side came from the hosts in the 14th minute. Michael Gray dribbled into the penalty area on the left side and squared a pass into the middle to Oscar Palmerin, but Kevin Hernandez was well-positioned to block his right-footed shot out for Sonoma State's initial corner kick of the contest.

The first 20 minutes ultimately saw a total of three blocked shots, and one corner kick and one yellow card for each team. In the 24th minute, senior All-American captain Cesar Ruvalcaba tracked a strong through ball up the middle to deny even a shot attempt to the opponent.

CPP then took the lead on its first true scoring threat of the day at 34:28. The sequence began with a pass ahead by Ruvalcaba to Woody Angell, who in turn found Sam Lena on the right flank. The sophomore forward lost his footing momentarily when entering the penalty area, but got up just in time to complete the short pass to his left back to Angell. The sophomore midfielder's left-footed shot was saved by Seawolf goalie Jack Chapman, but Singh, a true sophomore forward, was there to tap the rebound into the open net left-footed for his third goal of 2023 and a 1-0 edge. Angell was credited with his first assist on the year.

The action picked up significantly from there, with the sides fitting two more scores into the final 5:22 of the opening period. At 39:38, junior midfielder Mike Moser's left-sided corner kick was met by Singh's head at the center of the six-yard box, with the Los Alamitos product finding the bottom right corner past a diving Chapman to double the advantage. Singh thus moved into a threeway tie atop the CPP scoring chart with Mads Frederiksen and Paul Roger Henschke. Moser's assist was his second this year and fifth as a Bronco.

A mere 46 seconds later, however, Sonoma State had pulled one back. Cypress Navarro-Acio played a pass up the left sideline, and Jvon Cunningham made a nice move on his defender to free himself up to go sprinting down that left flank. His left-footed cross as he approached the 18-yard box was completed at the far post by Oliver Ziemer, whose right-footed shot bulged the net on the bottom right for the sixth-year senior forward's first of 2023. Cunningham's assist was his first. CPP's lengthy shutout streak was also thus snapped at 430:44.

True junior Luke Garciduenas made a tough stop on Ziemer's attempt at an equalizer early in the second stanza in the 50th minute, with a subsequent bicycle-kick try by Sean Rohane falling well short of the target moments later.

CPP missed a golden chance to regain a two-goal cushion in the 66th minute. A defensive miscue sent Frederiksen in toward the Seawolf penalty area uncontested, but Chapman went down to make a stellar save and keep his side in the contest.

In the 73rd minute, the Broncos had their clincher. Again it was from a left-sided corner kick, this one from Max Laguna, after Angell's shot from the left edge of the penalty box had been parried over the end line by Chapman. Laguna's left-footer was headed into the right side by sophomore Marcus Jorgensen, who had just come on at halftime for his official CPP debut after a transfer from Louisville. The assist was a second on the year for Laguna, a fourth-year junior from Anaheim.

Garciduenas drew a sixth start this season in the CPP goal and fourth in a row, providing two saves. Chapman, a redshirt freshman, had three stops for the home side. The Broncos held a 13-7 shot advantage.

The Broncos now return to Pomona and await their CCAA home opener under Friday night lights on Oct. 6 against second-ranked Chico State (7-0, 0-0 CCAA). Kickoff at Kellogg Stadium is slated for 7 p.m., after the women's contest at 4:30 p.m.
