CARSON, Calif. - League leader Cal Poly Pomona dominated in all facets and dispatched last-place area rival Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-0, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's soccer action Sunday at the Dignity Health Sports Park complex.
With the victory, CPP improves to 7-2-3 overall, a still-unbeaten 5-0-1 in the CCAA, and an undefeated 6-0-2 over its last eight. The Broncos remain two points clear of Cal State San Marcos atop the table. Cal State Dominguez Hills drops to 1-10-2 overall and 0-5-1 in league play. The Toros have lost five straight and are a winless 0-9-2 over their last 11.
CPP was receiving votes outside of Tuesday's latest United Soccer Coaches Division II national top 25, and is fourth in the West Region.
CPP finished with season highs of 27 total shots and 11 on goal, reaching the 20-shot mark for the third time this year. The Bronco defense allowed a season-low one shot, with none on target. They earned four corner kicks and did not surrender one.
Cal Poly Pomona opened the scoring at the 10:44 mark as
Jaclyn Cuevas turned in the rebound of a saved shot attempt by fellow true junior forward
Melanie Harradine. It was Cuevas' league-leading eighth goal of 2023 and ultimately went down as her CCAA-best fourth game-winner. Haradine now tops the team chart with a single-season career high of four assists. The Laguna Hills product has five helpers as a Bronco.
By that point, the Broncos had already taken three attempts, with
Tara Oper going high within the opening minute, and
Liberty Ortiz and Cuevas both getting denied by Kylie Yuzon in the Toro net.
True sophomore midfielder
Marisa Salazar, CPP's lone All-CCAA First Team honoree last fall, doubled the advantage at 64:25 with an unassisted tally into the upper left of the goal. It was the Paramount native's second of 2023 and fifth of her college career.
Fourth-year junior Bronco goalkeeper
Bella Hara did not have to make a single save in her 12th start of 2023 to pick up a fifth individual clean sheet, eighth for her career, and second in succession.
Bailey McNitt led the visitors with her season-high four shot attempts.
Yuzon, a first-year transfer from College of the Canyons, wound up with nine stops, one shy of her season high. The home side's lone shot attempt was credited in the 26th minute to fellow first-year junior college transfer Angelica Taylor (El Camino College). It was blocked.
The Broncos next head to Northern California for the second time in 2023 to conclude this season-long three-match road stretch. They are at San Francisco State (3-8-2, 2-3-1 CCAA) on Friday afternoon, Oct. 20, with kickoff at Cox Stadium set for 12:30 p.m.
