No. 12 Cal Poly Pomona Fells SF State from the Penalty Spot in Second Half, 2-0

SAN FRANCISCO - Two second-half penalty-kick strikes from Jasper Winslow lifted the No. 12 Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer program over San Francisco State University, 2-0, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action inside Cox Stadium on Friday afternoon.

With the victory, CPP improves to 8-1-4 overall and 4-1-2 in the CCAA. The result moves the Broncos from fourth up to sole possession of second in the table, one point behind rival Cal State LA, but with four more contests left on the Friday night ledger. A second straight defeat drops 11th-place SF State to 3-8-2 overall and 1-5-1 in league play.

Within just the first 45 seconds, senior All-American captain Cesar Ruvalcaba's right-footed shot straight on from 25 yards was caught with some difficulty by junior first-year SF State goalkeeper Fernando Escobedo Guzman. Mike Moser's direct free kick from 20 yards in the 21st minute sailed just over the crossbar.

CPP had another couple of opportunities over the final seven minutes. Jakob Singh first latched onto a fine through ball by Max Laguna down the right side, only for his right-footed shot to be turned away by Escobedo Guzman. Moments later, Paul Roger Henschke had a penalty shout against a charging Escobedo Guzman on another solid through pass, but the match official said to play on. That would be a foreshadow.

Finally near the end of a scoreless first half, Laguna's right-sided cross was headed over the top of the frame by Woody Angell at the far post.

Just over two minutes into the second stanza, Laguna's left-sided corner kick was headed just barely wide of the right post by Melvyn Perez Cortez. In the 55th, this time it was Gator Javier Espinal-Perez's header flashing narrowly wide of the left post from a right-sided corner kick as the game stayed scoreless.

The 65th minute saw Escobedo Guzman go down to his left to corral a right-footed shot on the ground from outside the area by Laguna after a free kick.

The Broncos finally broke through in the 66th minute. Ruvalcaba's crossing ball from the left end line found the hand of a Gator, and the match official pointed directly to the penalty spot on this occasion. Though Escobedo Guzman guessed correctly on his dive attempt, Winslow put his strong right-footed shot into the left side for a 1-0 lead.

A mere 112 seconds later at 67:33, Winslow was back behind the ball from the spot, this time due to a hard-contact foul on the right edge of the penalty area after a long throw-in by Perez Cortez. Escobedo Guzman again guessed right, this time to the opposite side, but Winslow's try was too well-placed to keep out. The fourth-year junior defender out of Los Angeles now has three goals on the season and for his career, with the opener going down as his first game-winner.

As SF State searched for an avenue to get back into the match, Julio Gonzalez Ponce's 69th-minute header from a right-sided corner kick glanced off the crossbar and went over for a goal kick. One last shot by the home side, from a free-kick organization, was well high of the frame from Emerson Trujillo as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

Senior CJ Walker started for the second game in a row and second time for 2023, finishing with a season-high two saves and notching his milestone 10th career individual clean sheet. Escobedo Guzman collected a season-high six stops in his sixth start of the year. The visitors wound up with a 12-5 advantage in shots.

The Broncos remain in Northern California to round out another three-match road stretch, traveling south to Seaside to face No. 22 Cal State Monterey Bay (9-2-3, 5-1-1 CCAA) on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 22. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. at the Otter Sports Complex Soccer Stadium, after the women play at 11:30 a.m.
