POMONA - The No. 11 Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer program produced four different goal-scorers, two in each half, en route to a 4-1 defeat of Cal State East Bay in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action at Kellogg Stadium on Friday night.
A third straight victory improved CPP to 10-1-4 overall through 15 games for the second straight year and 6-1-2 in the CCAA. Needing a solitary point, the Broncos are now assured a ninth consecutive CCAA Tournament berth next month. They remain in sole possession of second place, still four points behind No. 4 Cal State LA, a 3-0 winner at Sonoma State earlier Friday. CSUEB drops to 7-6-3 overall, 2-5-2 in league play and 6-3-1 away from home. The Pioneers are a winless 0-3-2 over their last five matches.
As they've been prone to do all season long, the Broncos struck early on Friday evening, needing all of four and a half minutes for
Mike Moser to register his first of 2023, unassisted. The junior midfielder corralled the rebound of a blocked
Woody Angell shot and rolled a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner from the penalty spot. CPP has now scored in the opening 10 minutes seven times this season.
The hosts doubled their advantage at the 10:48 mark, Angell dribbling ahead and feeding sophomore forward
Mads Frederiksen on the latter's fifth, which eventually became the Dane's team-best third game-winner. Frederiksen's right-footer from the left edge of the 18-yard box wrong-footed the Pioneer net-minder and went in at the near post.
Following the interval, the visitors pulled one back through junior Aaron Farnan with his team-best sixth, assisted by Mateo Didomenico.
Any potential drama would soon be swatted away by CPP, however, as senior All-American forward
Paul Roger Henschke came up with his team-leading eighth at 60:10 to restore a two-goal cushion. Angell and true sophomore forward
Jakob Singh each picked up assists, with the former Bronco notching his second two-assist effort of 2023.
Sixth-year senior outside back
Christian Miramontes provided the unassisted 77th-minute clincher. It was his career-best third of the season and seventh total in the green and gold.
Senior
CJ Walker, named Tuesday for the first time as the CCAA Defensive Player of the Week, had one save in his fourth consecutive start in the CPP net. Making his 15th start for the Pioneers, freshman Adan Corona got to four stops. The Broncos held a 22-7 shot advantage.
The Broncos remain in Pomona for their 2023 regular-season home finale against Cal State San Marcos (7-6-3, 4-3-2 CCAA) this Sunday, Oct. 29. Kickoff on Senior Day at Kellogg Stadium is slated for 11:30 a.m., with the women's game at 2 p.m. The Broncos and Cougars are rated third and eighth, respectively, in the latest West Region poll.
