Gators Bite Broncos’ Win Streak in the Bay

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The No. 13 ranked CPP volleyball team fell to San Francisco State on Thursday night, suffering their first CCAA loss of the season and snapping their 10-game winning streak. Despite the loss, the Broncos still hold an impressive 13-2 record on the season and maintain first place in the CCAA standings, having gone 6-1 in conference.

Daisy Duke helped the Broncos get out of the gate, recording three kills in the first six points to put CPP up 6-0. However, after taking that lead, the Broncos struggled to regain their groove against the Gators for the rest of the match.

SFSU battled back through the first set, keeping the score close and eventually bringing it to 24-21. The Gators then rattled off five consecutive points to take set one by a score of 26-24, despite never having the lead until claiming the set point.

After falling in the second set by a score of 25-18, the Broncos put up a fight in the final set - never trailing by more than four points. Just as the Gators did in the opening set, the Broncos looked to make a late push to stay alive. Down 21-24, kills by Kaitlan Tucker and Sarah Ybarra helped tie the game at 24-24. However, a kill and a service ace by SFSU would end the match and hand the Broncos their first conference loss of the season.

Duke was the lone Bronco to record double-digit kills at 11. The team's .161 attack percentage was the lowest of the season, compared to San Francisco State's second-highest of the season at .357. Six different Broncos collected a block assist, while Samantha Campion and Avery Percival led the defense with 10 and nine digs, respectively.

Up Next
The Broncos will head back down to SoCal for a nationally-ranked matchup against #14 Cal State San Bernardino this Saturday, October 7th, at 5:00 PM. The game will be played in the newly re-opened Coussoulis Arena, which had been closed for over a year due to floods in September 2022 and again in August 2023, causing CSUSB to relocate their athletics events to an auxiliary gym. Saturday's match will be just the second one played on the new court.
