POMONA - Ninth-ranked Cal Poly Pomona tallied three times within the first 12 minutes and never looked back in thoroughly outclassing Stanislaus State behind seven different goal-scorers, 8-0, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men's soccer action Sunday at Kellogg Stadium.
With the result, CPP remains unbeaten at 7-0-3 overall and 3-0-1 in the CCAA. Stanislaus State falls to 3-7-1 overall and 0-3-1 in league play.
The first-place Broncos are unbeaten through 10 matches for just the second time in their history, since 1983. The only other instance was a program-best 9-0-1 start to the 2014 campaign.
CPP fell a goal shy of matching the single-game program record. The Broncos routed Loyola Marymount 9-1 on the road on Oct. 8, 1990, and Cal State Bakersfield 9-0 at home on Nov. 10, 1984. They have gotten to eight goals three other times, most recently in an 8-1 defeat of Dominican in Belmont on Aug. 28, 2009.
Once again on Sunday, the Broncos were quick to dent the scoreboard, as they scored in the opening 10 minutes for the sixth time in 2023, and struck first for the eighth successive contest. Just 1:53 into the game, All-American graduate student
Melvyn Perez Cortez got his head to
Max Laguna's right-sided corner kick, and guided it into the bottom left for his first major college goal. It would go down as the game-winner. Laguna's assist was his third of the year and seventh of his career.
In the ninth minute, it was 2-0.
Christian Miramontes got to the end line on the left side and crossed into the middle.
Woody Angell's initial shot from around the penalty spot was saved by Stan State goalie Robby Rosas, but the ball was simply left onto Angell's path to tuck the rebound home into the bottom left for his first in the green and gold.
The result was already put pretty well out of doubt three and a half minutes later. Angell beat his defender on the right end line and played a short, square pass that
Paul Roger Henschke only had to touch into the bottom left from inside six yards. It was the senior All-American forward's milestone 25th career goal. Angell was given his second assist of 2023 and fourth as a second-year Bronco.
The hosts made it 4-0 in the 25th minute as All-American senior captain
Cesar Ruvalcaba's long throw-in from the left side was deposited via header into the bottom right by
Mikey Sedano toward the far post. The goal marked Sedano's first points of the season, and Ruvalcaba's single-season career-best fourth assist. He now has seven as a Bronco.
CPP added a fifth in the 58th minute. After nice combination play down the right side from
Marcus Jorgensen, to CCAA Offensive Player of the Week
Jakob Singh, to
Kevin Hernandez,
Melvin Leon turned in Hernandez's right-sided cross at the far post for his second on the year. It was Singh's first collegiate assist and Hernandez's first of 2023.
In the 62nd, Icelandic freshman
Arni Sigursteinsson finished off Angell's through ball with a low right-footer for his first college tally.
Angell slipped Sigursteinsson through again in the 66th, with the latter player getting taken down in the box. Angell sent his penalty kick and new goalie Sebastian Castellanos in opposite directions, finding the bottom left with his right foot for his first collegiate brace.
A 70th-minute left-sided corner kick was punched out by Castellanos, only for Miramontes to nod in the rebound for an 8-0 bulge. It was the sixth-year senior outside back's second of the season and sixth career.
True junior goalkeeper
Luke Garciduenas did not need to make a save in his eighth start in the CPP goal of 2023 and sixth in a row.
CJ Walker made his season debut and played the second half. Rosas had three stops before giving way to Castellanos (one save) for the final 41 minutes.
The Broncos outshot the Warriors, 23-3, with 12 on frame to none by the visitors. Stan State sophomore forward Tyler Tipton, the CCAA's leading goal-scorer with nine, was held without one for just the fifth time in 2023, and finished with one off-target attempt.
The Broncos conclude this season-long three-game home stand on Thursday night, Oct. 12, against 19th-ranked rival Cal State LA (8-1-1, 3-1 CCAA). Kickoff at Kellogg Stadium is slated for 7 p.m., after the women's contest at 4:30 p.m.
