CCAA Leader CPP Is 4-0 in League for First Time Since 1999 After Dropping Stan State, 3-1

POMONA - Cal Poly Pomona put together a comprehensive 3-1 victory over Stanislaus State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's soccer match Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Stadium.

A fourth consecutive win improves CPP to 6-2-2 overall and 4-0 in the CCAA. The Broncos remain in sole possession of first place in the table, having taken over that spot on Friday. They are an unbeaten 5-0-1 over their last six. Stanislaus State, the 2022 CCAA regular-season co-champion and preseason coaches' favorite, falls to 4-5-2 overall and 1-2-1 in league play.

The Broncos are 4-0 in the CCAA for the first time in over two decades, since they started the 1999 conference slate at 6-0 en route to finishing as NCAA Division II national runners-up in Miami Shores, Fla.

The first shot of the day did not come until the 12th minute, with a long-distance try by Marivic Lek-Miro easy to corral for Bella Hara. CPP's first attempt came three and a half minutes later, with Liberty Ortiz lifting a direct free kick, from even further away, just over the crossbar.

Over the remainder of the first half, Alexis Macias was twice turned away by Natalia Ochoa in the Warrior net, and Ortiz had another free kick blaze narrowly over the frame.

Then just when it looked like the teams would head to their benches scoreless at the half, true sophomore Marisa Salazar notched her first goal of 2023 for her first points of the season with about three ticks left. The Broncos stole a right-sided Warrior throw-in and Melanie Harradine dribbled around 25 yards down the left flank across midfield. The true junior expertly found a streaking Salazar in the center of the pitch, with the latter taking a couple of touches into the penalty box before placing a right-footed shot from 15 yards into the bottom left corner.

Cal Poly Pomona doubled its advantage at 55:00 via a tremendous counterattack strike. After back-to-back blocked shots around her own penalty area, Harradine ran onto a defensive clearance and sprinted another 15-20 yards again down the left side. This time, she slipped an incredible right-footed pass on the ground to split defenders that fellow junior forward Tara Oper latched onto right at the edge of the 18-yard-box, beating Ochoa to it as the Warrior exited her goal. Having rounded Ochoa, it was an easy right-footed tap-in into the empty net for Oper from six yards for 2-0. Harradine's first collegiate two-assist game gives her three on the year and four for her career.

Just before the hour mark, the Broncos had their clincher. Ochoa's miscue on a back pass gifted the hosts a right-sided corner kick. Oper sent it toward the top of the penalty box, where Auburn Burnett headed it into the mixer. Jaclyn Cuevas was in the right spot to nod the ball over Ochoa and in from inside six yards for the commanding 3-0 cushion. The goal was Cuevas' league-best seventh.

CPP came close to making it 4-0 in the 67th as Mikaela Marr picked off an errant pass just inside her own half, and dribbled all the way into the opposing penalty box before her left-footer hit the outside of the net.

Arionna Imhoff denied the home side a shutout with a left-footed goal from just outside the left edge of the six-yard box in the 87th minute.

Hara, the reigning CCAA Defensive Player of the Week, finished with one save in a 10th start in a row in the CPP goal. Ochoa, a true sophomore coming off of a career-best 11-save effort in Friday's come-from-behind 2-2 draw at Cal State San Bernardino, had five stops in her eighth start of the year for the Warriors. CPP outshot Stan State, 13-10.

The Broncos conclude their second three-game home stand of the season on Thursday night, Oct. 12, against 2022 CCAA Tournament champion Cal State LA (5-1-4, 2-0-2 CCAA). Kickoff at Kellogg Stadium is set for 4:30 p.m., with the men's contest following at 7 p.m.
