Early Deficit Hurts Broncos’ Second Half Comeback Efforts

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team fell to Cal State Eat Bay in Kellogg Arena on Saturday afternoon by a score of 66-73. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 2-6 on the season and 1-3 in CCAA play.

Both teams struggled to score out of the gate, with the score sitting at 10-8 through the first eight minutes of play in favor of the Pioneers. Over the next four minutes, East Bay would go on a 14-0 tear to take a startling 24-8 lead.  This run was partially self-inflicted, as the Broncos had five fouls, five missed shots, and five turnovers during that stretch. From then on, CPP was playing catchup to narrow the large lead. They were able to bring the score within six on a layup by Kodey Weary in the paint with two minutes to go in the first, but a late scoring burst by CSUEB put them back up 37-22 going into the half.

The Broncos put on a decent showing in the second half, outscoring the Pioneers 44-36 for their second-most points in a half this season. The Broncos were able to narrow the lead to single-digits halfway into the second, coming on a layup by Jordan Carpenter with 12:16 on the clock. The two teams would trade points for the remainder of the game, with East Bay maintaining a steady lead between five and 11 points.

Four different players scored in double figures for the Pioneers, contributing to their early lead that they never relinquished. Brandon Porter and Chris Gayles Jr. both reached double figures for the Broncos, while 10 different players scored at least two points.

This was Gayles Jr.'s second straight game with 11 points, and interestingly enough, has steadily scored more points than his previous appearance in every game this season. After scoring four against both Biola and CUI, Gayles scored seven against Cal Poly Humboldt and Chico State, then this weekend scored 11 in each game against San Francisco State and Cal State East Bay. If this exponential trend continues, Gayles Jr. could be putting up some serious numbers come January.

The two teams were relatively close on shooting, East Bay at 46 percent from the floor and the Broncos shooting 40 percent. CSUEB outscored the Broncos 18-7 on fastbreak points, while CPP outscored their opponent 16-9 on second chance points. CPP continued to struggle beyond the arc, shooting 15 percent in the game and ranking last in the conference with 24 percent on threes this season. But all told, that 14-0 run in the first half was the true difference maker in the game.
