SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - In a thrilling Tuesday afternoon matchup, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team triumphed over the new Division II addition, the Westmont Warriors. The Broncos secured their sixth victory of the season, enhancing their overall record to an impressive 6-3 while four Broncos reached double figures.
Sydney Nelson emerged as the standout in today's game, securing her first collegiate double-double and leading the team in points and rebounds. This performance marked her seventh double-figure game out of the first nine in her collegiate career. Leading the charge, Nelson contributed 18 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists.
From the opening tip-off, the Broncos established dominance, briefly relinquishing the lead only once—during the Warriors' first point of the game. The team's largest lead materialized in the fourth quarter, reaching an impressive 61-44 in the eighth minute.
Kalaya Buggs played a pivotal role for the Broncos, emerging as the second-highest scorer with 16 points, five rebounds, and six assists.
Mydrea Moore and Andrea Stajic both reached career-high milestones in this matchup. All stats for Moore were career highs in today's game with 10 points, seven rebounds, three blocks, and two steals, while Stajic recorded a career-best four steals, along with 3 assists and three three-pointers.
The Warriors managed to tie the game at 18-18 with six minutes remaining in the second quarter. However, the Broncos quickly regained control, with Stajic sinking a crucial three-pointer from the left side. Jeanette Fine's adept play down low, coupled with a no-look pass, allowed Nelson to convert for two points, maintaining the Broncos' lead at 33-27 going into halftime.
Entering the third quarter, Stajic continued her hot streak, going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc and 5-for-9 from the field. Breanne Ha's impressive contribution, including a clutch fade-away jumper, extended the Broncos' lead to 42-36. The quarter concluded with a commanding 57-41 lead, with Nelson at the forefront of the charge.
In the fourth quarter, Nelson solidified her double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Despite the Westmont Warriors' effort, the Broncos' unstoppable force prevailed winning 70-56, and elevating their record to 6-3 and 1-0 all-time against the Warriors.
