POMONA, Calif. - The Broncos showcased their offensive power in their CCAA home opener, holding the Gators to a mere 36 points while notching an impressive 73 points on offense. This 73-36 victory over San Francisco State marked the lowest point total conceded by the Broncos this season.
The scoring began at a slow pace, with only 6 points scored between both teams six minutes into the game. Sydney Nelson kickstarted the Broncos' offense with a pump fake drive from the right side resulting in her first points of the game. Nelson totaled four blocks in the game, including a denial in the second quarter as the Gators attempted to spin inside the key. In total, Nelson contributed 10 points, nine rebounds, and two steals. This is her 6th double figure game in her first seven collegiate games.
Kalaya Buggs led the team with four points in the first, all from the free-throw line. This trend persisted as the Broncos finished an impressive 19 of 21 from the charity stripe. Buggs ultimately led the team in scoring for the night, delivering 15 points along with five rebounds, three assists, and a steal.
The defensive showcase continued as the Broncos restricted the Gators to shots within 3 feet, with both teams managing only one jump shot in the entire first quarter. The Broncos closed the opening quarter, holding the Gators to just 7 points while leading 14 to 7.
Jeanette Fine and Andrea Stajic contributed to the offensive onslaught, with Fine making a no-look pass to Stajic for a layup in the fourth quarter. Fine totaled nine points on the night, along with seven from Stajic.
Skylar Dillon, Keke Scott, and Mydrea Moore each tallied 6 points, with Dillon notching four rebounds and a steal, Scott maneuvering behind her defender for key baskets and a steal, and Moore recording four rebounds and two blocks that came in a single play during the fourth quarter.
The Broncos maintained control throughout the game, only experiencing a tie at the 0-0 mark to open the game. Ending with a commanding 37-point lead over the Gators, the Broncos picked up their fifth win of the season and improve to 2-1 in CCAA play.
