LA MIRADA, Calif. – Brent Cota went 3 for 6 with a double, a triple and two RBI,
Nin Burns II went 2 for 5 with three RBI and
Tyler Chaffee hit his second home run of the season as the No. 21 Cal Poly Pomona baseball team pounded Biola, 9-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Eagles Diamond in La Mirada.
The Broncos will head into CCAA play this weekend with an 8-1 overall record. The Eagles, meanwhile, fall to 4-8.
Biola got on the board first with a run-scoring double in the bottom of the third inning, but the Eagles bats would fall silent until the ninth. In that time, CPP plated three runs in the fourth, three more in the eighth and sealed the contest with three more in the ninth.
The Broncos loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth before Cota scored when
Johnny Pappas grounded into a double play to tie the game at 1-1. Chaffee then launched a two-run shot to left field for the 3-1 lead.
In the eighth, Burns II singled home Chaffee, then Cota tripled to right field allowing
Trent MacKinney and Burns II to come home for the 6-1 lead. An inning later,
Darius Price singled home Pappas, then Burns II brought home Price and Chaffee with a hit up the middle.
In their last at bat, the Eagles were able to bring across two runs, but it wouldn't be enough.
CPP had 12 hits in the contest – Cota and Burns II had the only multi-hit effort for the visitors with 3 and 2 hits, respectively.
Dylan Esquival (1-0) was awarded the victory in relief after taking over for starter
Elias Jauregui to open the fifth inning. Jauregui gave up one run on five hits, striking out two of the 17 batters he faced. Esquival,
Andrew Campbell,
Drew D'Ambra,
Matthew Henry and
Zuko Tillman each saw one inning of work out of the bullpen.
