POMONA – Rhys Stevens and
Caleb Reyes combined for a one-hit shutout on the mound,
Trent MacKinney was 2 for 2 with two runs scored and
Marco Malerba recorded a two-run single as the 21
st-ranked Cal Poly Pomona earned a 4-0 victory over the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in the season opener Friday night at Scolinos Field in Pomona.
Stevens tossed the first five and a thirds innings, allowing the only UCCS hit in the top of the fifth before Reyes came in and shut the door on the final three and two-thirds innings. Stevens struckout eight batters, walking just two while Reyes fanned four batters and walked one.
Offensively,
Cedrick Perez got the scoring started for the Broncos when he brought home
Trent MacKinney on a sacrifice fly in the fifth. In the seventh, Malerba tore a single through the left side of the infield to score
Nin Burns II and MacKinney for CPP's 3-0 lead. Two batters later,
Johnny Pappas singled home Malerba for the eventual 4-0 final score.
MacKinney and Burns II each had two hits in their CPP debuts while five others had at least one hit, accounting for nine total hits by the home team.
Cal Poly Pomona and UCCS will resume the four-game series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm.

- Head coach Randy Betten is now 356-219 in 12 seasons at Cal Poly Pomona, including 189-85 at home and 103-59 in non-conference games (45-17 in non-conference games at home).
- The all-time series between CPP and UCCS is now 11-9 (the Broncos have won the last four contests), including 10-6 in games played in Pomona; Excluding 2021 when CPP did not compete, these programs have opened the season against each other every year since 2017 to make up the entirety of their all-time series.

- Rhys Stevens improves to 5-5 in 12 career starts, lowering his career ERA to 3.07 with 85 strikeouts.
- It is the 155th shutout for the Broncos in team history, and the 55th in the Randy Betten era, and the second-ever to come on opening day; the only other shutout for CPP in the season opener came on this day exactly 11 years ago in a 20-0 win over Saint Martin's.
- The Broncos are now 207-116 in single games since the start of the 2011 campaign.
- Ranked at No. 21 in this week's College Baseball Newspaper/American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Top 30 Coaches' Poll, this is the 67th week since 1998 that CPP has been nationally ranked, including 59 weeks under Randy Betten.
- Having scored at least one run in today's game, the Broncos' offense has not been shutout in a program-record 121 consecutive games dating back to Feb. 23, 2019. Additionally, CPP has not been shutout in 68 consecutive home games dating back to Apr. 29, 2018.
- As a program, Cal Poly Pomona is now 1,689-1,505-21 in its 63rd season overall, including 640-427-8 in home games since the start of the 1980 season.
