POMONA – Alicia Jones and
Ally Bates each scored in double-figures as the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team dominated every aspect of the contest in winning in blowout fashion, 71-43, over visiting San Francisco State on Thursday night at Kellogg Arena.
The Broncos snap a five-game losing skid, improving to 13-8 overall and 10-7 in the CCAA. The Gators have now lost nine straight, dropping to 7-16 (3-14 CCAA).
SF State controlled most of the first quarter and eventually took its largest lead of the game at 16-10 with 8:50 to go in the second quarter, but CPP went on a 19-4 run to finish the half to earn a 29-20 lead going into the break.
From then on, it was all Broncos, jumping out to a 30 point lead late before settling for the 28-point triumph.
As a team, the Broncos connected on 45.0 percent of their shots (27 of 60), hitting seven three pointers. Jones' 23 points was one shy of her career-best in playing all 40 minutes Thursday. Bates added 18 points with 13 rebounds, tying a career-best in that category. Both
Kalaya Buggs and
Ciara James each grabbed 11 rebounds.
For the Gators, Mya Blake led with a team-best 15 points as the only SF State player with more than six points. SFSU was just 15 of 55 from the floor (27.3 percent), a season-low for a CPP opponent in 2022-23.
Cal Poly Pomona will host Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday evening at 5:30 pm. The Broncos will also honor at halftime the 40
th and 20
th anniversary of two of the program's five NCAA National Championships as part of Basketball Alumni Night. CPP Hall of Famer Violet Palmer will also be on hand to accept an invitation into the CCAA Hall of Fame, all taking place during the halftime break.
