Broncos Give Toros Scare Before Falling In Semifinal Round

TURLOCK, Calif. – Donja Payne put in a team-high 15 points and both Alicia Jones and Kalaya Buggs added 12 each as the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team gave its all for 40 minutes, only to come up just short in a 67-61 loss to sixth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills in the CCAA Tournament semifinal Friday night at Fitzpatrick Arena in Turlock.

The Broncos, who entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed, falls to 18-10 overall and will await word on their NCAA postseason fate as the Selection Show to unveil the 64-team NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament bracket is set to air on NCAA.com Sunday at 7:30 pm PST. The top-seeded Toros (28-1) advance to Saturday's CCAA Tournament final against No. 2 seed Cal State San Marcos.

While the Toros led nearly 39 minutes in the contest, the Broncos stayed within single digits for most of that time. In fact, a Payne layup with 6:10 left in the game put CPP within one point at 55-54, but the nationally-ranked Toros proved why they are expected to be the top seed in the West Region next week, going on a 12-4 run over a six-minute stretch to put the game out of reach.

Payne's point total came from 6 of 7 shooting and 3 of 6 from the line while she also pulled down nine rebounds before fouling out of the game late. Jones and Buggs had 12 tallies each; Buggs tied Payne for the most rebounds on the team with nine. Breanne Ha added nine points and Ally Bates scored eight.

The Broncos were the better shooting team Friday night, hitting 41.7 percent on 20 of 48 while the Toros were held to only 34.9 percent on 22 of 63 from the floor.

CSUDH was led by the 15 points of Nala Williams. Three other Toros contributed 10 points each.

Cal Poly Pomona will wait to see if it will earn an at-large bid into next week's NCAA West Regional. If the Broncos hear their name on Selection Sunday, it will be CPP's 28th appearance in the NCAA Tournament all-time, and the seventh time in the Danelle Bishop era. With five NCAA national titles in program history, Cal Poly Pomona is tied for the most national championships in NCAA Division II history.
