CARSON, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team combined for 10 runs and 22 hits on Saturday, securing a doubleheader sweep over host Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson with final scores of 5-3 and 5-2.
The Broncos rise to 18-10 overall and 10-8 in the CCAA. The Toros fall to 14-13 (9-8 CCAA).
While
Caleb Reyes shut down the Toro offense in his eight innings of work in the opener, the Broncos spread their five runs out throughout the contest, first scoring in the top of the first when
Nin Burns II singled home
Trent MacKinney. Another run came home in the second when
Darius Price lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring
Tyler Chaffee for the 2-0 advantage.
It wasn't until the seventh when CPP added to its lead on a
Cedrick Perez RBI single bringing home Burns II. In the eighth,
Ben Lee scored on a wild pitch, and in the ninth, Chaffee lifted his own sac fly to plate
Marco Malerba for the 5-0 lead.
Reyes was masterful on the bump, allowing just two hits and one walk, striking out seven. With the five-run lead in the ninth,
Eric Romo came on and scattered three hits, giving up three runs, but worked himself out of the jam to end the game and help the Broncos to a 5-3 win.
Brent Cota led the way with three hits as Burns II, Malerba and Lee each recorded two hits in the opener.
In the nightcap, CPP was first to score, plating two runs in the top of the first when Perez singled home both
Johnny Pappas and MacKinney for the 2-0 lead. However, CSUDH pulled even at 2-2 in the bottom of the first and it would remain that way until the fifth.
In the fifth, MacKinney brought home
Jacob Lopez for the go-ahead run, then an inning later, Price and Cota registered RBI to push the lead to 5-2. Between starter
AJ Moreno and reliever
Scott Armstrong, the two kept the Toros off the board after the first inning to earn the win and the save, respectively. Moreno worked five innings and allowed the two runs on two hits, striking out six. Armstrong worked the final two, giving up just three hits and striking out three.
Offensively, MacKinney, Pappas, Perez and Jopez all had two hits for the Broncos in game two.
Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Dominguez Hills will wrap up the series Sunday with a single game in Carson beginning at Noon.
