POMONA - Senior ace
Caleb Reyes was thoroughly dominant in a nine-inning complete game to lead Cal Poly Pomona past Stanislaus State, 6-1, to begin a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series at Scolinos Field on Friday afternoon.
With the win, CPP improves to 24-14 overall and 16-12 in the CCAA. Stanislaus State drops to 21-17 overall and an even 14-14 in league play. The teams had entered the day in third and fifth, respectively, in the conference standings, now separated by two games. The Broncos are fifth in the latest West Region poll, with the Warriors sixth there.
Reyes (6-1) scattered six singles and a pair of walks while striking out four in the 108-pitch masterpiece. The right-hander was starting his second straight series opener, and lowered his CCAA-leading ERA to 1.32. It was the Broncos' second complete game of 2023, but first of the nine-inning variety since current teammate
Noel Soto's one last season in a 6-0 home shutout of San Francisco State on April 9. Reyes, a first-year Occidental transfer, tossed a pair of nine-inning complete-game victories for the Division III Tigers late last season.
Reyes registered four 1-2-3 frames, in the third, sixth, seventh and eighth. His best stretch on the day was 12 straight batters retired between back-to-back two-out singles in the fifth, and a two-out infield single in the ninth. Reyes got out of that fifth-inning jam with a called third strike.
The Broncos produced more than enough offense behind Reyes on this day. They posted single tallies in the second and third.
Darius Price's third double on the year drove in
Cedrick Perez, who had walked with one away, for the game's initial run. Back-to-back two-out singles, the latter by
Marco Malerba, doubled the advantage as
Brent Cota scored.
After Stanislaus State struck for its lone score in the fourth, CPP broke things open with a three-run sixth. Perez was plunked for starters, and Price followed with a single to put Broncos at the corners.
Tyler Chaffee's squeeze attempt brought in the third CPP run on a throwing error. Sacrifice flies by
Nin Burns II and
Trent MacKinney made it 5-1.
The hosts generated an insurance run in the eighth through a two-out rally. Burns II singled on the infield ahead of MacKinney's fifth double.
Price was 2-for-3 for the game with a walk, double, run and RBI. MacKinney wound up 1-for-2 with the double and two RBI. Perez reached base safely twice without the benefit of a hit, and scored twice.
Tony Jacob (3-2) gave up five runs, three of them earned, on six hits and four walks. The sophomore southpaw from Santa Clarita fanned one.
The Broncos and Warriors continue their weekend series at Scolinos Field with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is set for noon.
