POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team rebounded from Thursday's loss to sweep visiting Cal State LA in a Friday doubleheader at Scolinos Field in Pomona with winning scores of 8-2 and 4-1.
The Broncos rise to 20-12 overall and 12-10 in the CCAA, moving into third place in the conference standings. The Golden Eagles fall to 12-18 (7-14 CCAA).
In the opener, CPP jumped out to a 7-0 lead through the first four innings of play. CSULA got two runs back in the sixth but another run by CPP in the eighth would finalize the 8-2 victory for the Broncos.
Nin Burns II went 4 for 5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.
Johnny Pappas was 3 for 5 with three RBI and a run scored.
Brent Cota also went 3 for 5 with two runs scored.
Cedrick Perez hit a two-run home run in the third.
Rhys Stevens (3-1) went the first six innings to earn the win on the mound, allowing four hits and two runs, striking out seven.
Elias Jauregui and
Scott Armstrong combined for three innings of shutout ball.
In the nightcap, CPP jumped out to another early lead, this time a 4-0 advantage through the first two innings. The only CSULA run came home in the fourth, but they threatened for more in the seventh before
Eric Romo came in to shut the door for the final out of the game with two runners on. He came on for Celeb Reyes (4-1) who tossed 6.1 innings and allowed just the one run on eight hits, striking out seven.
Burns II had another multi-hit game, his 11
th of the season, going 2 for 3 with a RBI.
Darius Price hit his third home run of the season, a towering shot well over the left field fence in the second inning.
Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State LA wraps up the four-game series Saturday in Pomona. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
